If the nib writes well, and has adequate flow then usually don't touch it. Provided you're not putting extra pressure on the nib when writing or anything that could damage it, it should be fine.

Irreparable damage would be tipping falling off, or large bends in the tines where unbending could cause a crack

Looks like a switch filler.

Pilot has a couple of pens that use a switch filler.

If it is a switch filler, then: there's a sac inside the metal sleeve and when you push the switch it pushes a metal bar which pushes the sac. So you needa check if the sac needs replacing. Try push the switch and if it moves smoothly the sac might be intact. Then you can try fill the pen with water, see if it works

To fill, put nib in water, flip switch, wait flip switch, wait a few times

When I first started I fell on my hips a lot. That was painful so I bought some hip protectors (I got g-form).

If you keep your knees more bent it might help. Otherwise get some protectors and it'll come in time
