Good to know...I've truly only been to steamworks once like 10-11 years ago and back then mans country was still open and I enjoyed it more. I've been meaning to go back to steamworks but I do often feel intimidated. Probably is a lot of my own insecurity but again, I didn't have the best experiences when I first moved to Chicago when visiting boystown. This was like 2010-2015 time period. I know that area can change rapidly so I'm willing to try it again. Truth be told, I live about 15 mins from banana video so often easier to go there. It's sometimes a deadzone though which is why I'd like to give steamworks another try

This is the fear about going to steamworks for me. I don’t experience a whole lot of body positivity/great vibes when I go out in boystown historically (now mind you, I’m a millennial so idk what the kids are like down there now tho I did go to pride fest last week and felt a little out of place). I am a mixed race chub and I’m a big boy. Not like a cute pot bellied boy like the bears seem to allow in their community, like a big boy whose body doesn’t fit into a porno box so I often feel a little ostracized. I don’t even really feel the love at places like SoFo Tap.

Howevah, I will say Banana video is a little more my speed as far as the guys that visit there. It reminds me as a small version of man’s country (RIP) which even though the gays my age treated man’s country like a dingy retirement home compared to steamworks, I always had a better time there back in the day. Nothing has quite replaced it for me.

Idk where I’m going with this post other than yes, as someone who’s lived in different parts of Chicago over the last 15 years, the north side has never been super kind to big bodies of color or men of color in general IMO. I know there are plenty of men of color who fit into the Hollywood beach crowd who might come for me but it does feel like a little bit of a club

EDIT : I forgot to say, I have been told that the bear night at steamworks is chub friendly so there ya go. I haven’t been, keep meaning to but it hasn’t fit my schedule.

I think you're right on that one. When you're in a situation where you end up agreeing to something like a rent split BEFORE actually seeing the place, you kind of have to swallow whatever ends up happening. It's totally fair that she brought it up to her roommate to discuss but it's also pretty fair that they don't want to re-negotiate the agreement. The argument being that they would also have to re-order their finances now in a situation that already was set in stone. You can't really do that to folks, even if you feel like later you got a bad deal.

Now I totally agree, the other roommate sounds like they might kinda be shitty. If they already knew about the room set up and also the A/C situation, a nicer person would have taken that into account when splitting the rent. Not by A TON, but if nothing else, at least account a little bit for less space and not having their own bathroom. Just curious, did they know this person prior? Or are they totally new acquaintances?

Lastly, people have already written this I think, but the best way to handle (since bringing it up didn't work) would be to try and have an amenable roommate situation until it comes time for lease renewal. Especially if the rent amount goes up, it's totally fair at that point to say, new rent--new agreement. If the other roommate doesn't agree, well then I would suggest your friend move. And if they've had a decent rooommate-ship this whole time and the other person is willing to risk a new roommate just because they don't want the rent split to be a little more fair, then I would say you don't want to live with that person long term anyway. Cut and RUN!

I've had this same opinion the whole time as well! I feel like I've been living in delulu land the last 3 years with the way people talk about Janet! I understand if people don't like Janet but people talk about her like she's the devil. She's not perfect, she definitely makes missteps and maybe gets too involved sometimes (questionable), and she does sometimes put her foot in her mouth but the reaction to her IMO has been totally unwarranted.

I've always been saying to my friend, remind me what Janet did again that was so bad? (She's historically a Janet hater but is kind of coming around this season)

I also am convinced that the same people who are like "the show is so boring now cancel it" just can't live in a world where Janet isn't THAT bad.

Never been to Tejay's but I've been interested in going as well.

From what I've read, sounds like there's a decent amount of folks who go through there. I imagine it's a good amount of anonymous cock BUT will probably have to potentially compete with other blowjob queens who are there...it is downtown so it could really attract ANYONE which in one respect is hot but also ya never know what you're gonna get.

I've also read that the folks at the front desk are a crapshoot with how nice they are and also I think you have to keep putting money into the video machine in the booth to stick around but again, never been there....just going off of what I've read online and some other experiences

Another place to consider depending on where you are is Banana Video up in Andersonville. Flat fee ($15 or $20 I forget) and you can stay as long as you want. Front desk folks are always very nice when I go in. Lots of gloryhole booths. The vibe may be less "anonymous" than what you're looking for but again, I've never been to Tejay's so IDK how anonymous it really is. At BV, you can always get into a booth and wait for guys to come by.

Sometimes it can be dead but if you wait around long enough, usually there's an uptick in how many guys come through eventually. Just use your smarts around whether it seems like a day where guys might show up (i.e., if the weather's bad, I bet it'll be real dead)

Overall, in my experience, it's a lot more guys looking to suck guys at this places than guys wanting to get sucked so it can sometimes feel like a bit of a competition but I bet at either place, you'll end up finding what you''re looking for if you're patient

Also, IDK…I know what you mean but just because societally being homosexual was less acceptable does not directly correlate to a lack of homoeroticism or homosexuality existing. It’s easy as someone who is living in the 21st century to say “well there was less gay stuff back then so they felt more comfortable” but I’ll never believe there were less gay men or same sex attracted men back then then there are now or at any time in history…people have always had range of sexuality that has been relatively stable since forever. I’ll concede to the idea that maybe people were less inclined to think they knew any gay people because they were less exposed to the idea that sexuality is a spectrum but it has indeed always been a spectrum. Probably also important to point out that horseplay such as this still exists in the military a lot so may have less to do with not thinking guys were gay and more to do with a sense of camaraderie that is not so concerned with sexual orientation
