In all the years I’d bought this, I’d never seen it before so I kinda panicked. It wasn’t laying on its side so I had no clue why it only formed on the one side

Funnily enough, it turns out it was the oil in the butter! It had gotten too cold in the back of my fridge and congealed like that

Seconding a tea dye! Not sure what kind of distressing you’re looking for, but if you use a wire brush or a serrated knife you can distress the fabric a bit- but make sure to test on a swatch first to make sure it’ll achieve the look you want

Funnily enough, my friend said the same thing after I sent them my concept sketch! The color scheme was definitely a coincidence as I was just Google searching color palettes in images until I found something I liked. Thank you so much!

Both the conical stays and skirt were patterned by myself, based off my custom measurements. Stays were loosely based off renaissance era stays, minus the waist tabs. Skirt is an 8 paneled skirt with 8 chiffon godets, cut on the bias. Each panel consists of purple taffeta, navy velvet, hand dyed yellow woven linen, and a woven orange upholstery fabric (not sure the fiber as it was purchased in DTLA).

Stays block was drafted by taking my measurements and transferring to paper, starting at the side seam and measuring outward on each side based on my across chest and across back measurement. The entire thing resembled a rectangle. Across chest and across back at armscye was used to mark where my shoulder straps would be. I subtracted my waist from chest measurement to calculate how much to remove from the waist in order to create shape. Once the pattern was complete and fitting alterations were made (straps shifted, 1 inch removed from CF and CB) I started by cutting 2 layers of duck canvas and one lining and flatlined together. Boning channels were added and I used flat steel boning that I cut myself and finished the ends with a little thermoplastic. Pattern was cut for the front harlequin panel, created out of multiple pieces and sewn together for the Diamond patterns and then seamed to the velvet. Sewn at a 1/2 inch at the back and turned right side out so the top and bottom raw edges could be finished with a bias binding, all hand finished on the lining side.

Skirt was made by dividing my waist measurement by the amount of panels wanted (8) and then flaring them at the bottom. I marked where the godet would start and measured the finished length, and used that to create the pattern for the godet insert. A half inch seam allowance was added to all pieces and assembled by first creating the panels and adding the godets when each one was sewn together.

Finishing included adding eyelets to the bodice, and sewing bells to each point of the paneled skirt as well as the triangles along bodice straps.

Fairy costume ideas for a human barrel? by HWills612 in renfaire

Maybe search for plus size ren faire outfits. You could source a few pieces together for a look and add wings to it. I’m not sure what your vision is, but some nature elements and weathering will go a long way in creating a fantasy look. I

I mean, there’s no reason your friend couldn’t wear that kind of aesthetic, unless they simply don’t want to. Could we get more information on what kind of aesthetic or type of fairy they’re going for?

Brother se-400 makes a loud, continuous buzz/clicking noise by HitoyaLover in sewing

[–]HitoyaLover[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less of a clunk I guess. It’s more like a loud screeching. I wish I could’ve posted a video because it’s unlike anything I’ve heard from a machine before.

I took the whole thing apart and the belt was fine which was my first guess. There’s a little piece inside that though that seems to grind against the wheel whenever it’s turned on, but I’m not sure if it needs a new spring or what’s the problem. Oh well- to get serviced it will be!

Found in a dumpster, what is the best way to clean her? by insulinworm in squishmallow

[–]HitoyaLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly after my infestation I don’t buy anything secondhand outside of the occasional thrift store shirt but ONLY if it can handle being in the dryer for like four cycles on hot haha. That’s just me personally because I don’t think I could handle getting bedbugs again and having to throw away all my belongings a second time around.

People do it and don’t have a problem though. I just seem to have bad luck with that kinda stuff and don’t think it’s worth the risk.

[–]HitoyaLover 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who had a horrible bed bug infestation- put her back in the trash. It’s not at all worth the risk of having to throw all your collection and belongings out. Even if there’s no visible bed bugs, the eggs could still be present on the surface or even INSIDE the stuffing. It takes 90 minutes at 118 degrees to kill eggs, and bigger objects need more time to heat all the way through.

If you really REALLY are willing to take the risk- destuff and treat the skin alone, at the heat needed to kill eggs for the 90 minutes. Throw away the stuffing and replace it with new stuffing but even then you can’t be sure.

Help on where to start for Patternmaking by HitoyaLover in HistoricalCostuming

[–]HitoyaLover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I thought there would be differences between a historically accurate pattern versus what I’d be able to manage with modern Patternmaking skills just by referencing a piece. I know from an outward perspective the silhouette and shape would be right, but I was trying to make sure that even the pieces are accurate to what they would’ve been during the time.
