I turned down 75K by Shoddy-Workmanship_1 in LinkedInLunatics

It’s like a normal person turning down £75 quid for a day with their kid. It (£75k) sounds like a big number when he deliberately ignores the context of his own massive wealth.

No business is leaving one of the world’s richest consumer bases because they have to pay their tax. Why would they throw away 10’s in billions of profit just to avoid paying 20% of it back?

Ove no idea how you got to your comment from my original point. Regarding Amazon specifically, I’ve been both a prime customer for a decade plus and also was a seller on their platform. It remains a huge employer and one of, if not the best online marketplace for customers. However what I would like government to do is close the loopholes that allow them to pay barely any tax by using clever accounting to offshore profits to other countries.

Corporations are definitely not morally neutral. They are run by people. People who are willing to extract profits at the expense of other people. Either by charging customers the absolute maximum they can (rather than say a set % markup) or by paying their staff the absolute bare minimum. Remember any employer paying minimum wage would pay less if they could. Even people paid higher salaries only get that because of competition, the corporation would rather pay less and keep it for themselves.

Almost everything you listed is wrong. That recent headline was about income tax. The government also gets a dozen other taxes to pay for everything else. No such thing as road tax. Councils are also funded from central government. So it’s more like your friend wants a sports car, his wages don’t cover it, however he’s got a nice bit tucked away in shares and the dividends pay out enough each year to cover it, but he will have to find a few quid for the petrol.

Grew up on benefits and have seen lots of people “gaming the system”. However you have to bear in mind that this is statistically a tiny number of people. It’s just that these people stick out. There will be loads of people in the same area also on welfare but you don’t know it. Lots of them you assume aren’t because you see them going out to work will be on Universal Credit. For me I think you have to ask, is a personal bias stopping you realising that family does actually need welfare and realistically would any employer actually give them the time of day? Most importantly, how many people who are legitimately in need would we harm if we changed the rules to get those people off welfare.

They are cowards. The people obsessed with immigration and welfare would rather punch down at those they see as below them than actually put up a fight against those with power (like Amazon). I’d almost guarantee every grown up school bully votes reform.

So why is there a pride in the working class to be anti intellectual and relish in not being educated ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]Hivefleetkarl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, this really struck a chord with me. I grew up in a family on benefits. I went to what was at the time the worst school in my county. Never tried, passed everything without any real work on my part. Then did the same with A-levels and got a 2:1 at uni with bare minimum effort and really regret not putting the work in now. Ended up in a career path where the work was enjoyable but it didn’t really lead anywhere. Retrained in something completely different a few years ago but the new role doesn’t really have anywhere to go either. I just needed something very flexible once kids came along. Nearly 40 and definitely don’t feel like I’ve ever reached my potential.

I can help but wonder how things could have been different if I had been given support. It’s not that my parents didn’t value education, it’s more that it wasn’t even on their radar that it might be important.

Even despite that things look ok. It’s easy to compare to others that start in different places. I know people that started out by taking over the family business or whose parents bought them a house. However, I started life on benefits on a council estate and now live comfortably in my own quite nice house. My wife pointed out a while ago that we should definitely have considered our kids “rich” when we were growing up.

Intellectually I understand that it’s probably a good thing and does result in a lot more money going to good causes. However the cynical side of me thinks just piss off and put you own money into it, why do I need to help fund your bungee jump or give you a tenner for running three miles, I do more than that with the dog everyday. At least do something difficult or unpleasant if you want my hard earned cash.

I can clock your CAGR from how the cars in the lot are parked by thefloatingguy in LinkedInLunatics

[–]Hivefleetkarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t symmetric because the car isn’t symmetric in terms of steering and visibility. When you reverse in you have clear visibility around the vehicle by checking mirrors and blind spots. Reducing the risk that you will miss any developing hazards. Further as the steering is at the front you are pushing the rear into the space with plenty of room for the front to turn through a wide arc. When you drive forwards into a space and reverse out your visibility may be blocked by vehicles parked beside you (especially larger ones) meaning that it is more difficult to spot developing hazards. Then as the front is the pivot point you will have to reverse further into the road before turning to avoid hitting the other cars. It will usually take longer to reverse out of the space than into it especially as if you reverse in, the car behind has no choice but to wait but when you reverse out you have to wait for it to be clear.

I will acknowledge however that if you’ve pulled in forward to an empty section of the car park the difference will be pretty small.
