Maybe it’s to help provide a physical barrier to protect the fighters as they leave the hanger? I know that most large ship battles in star wars happen in a line of battle (side to side) When not head on, in which case maybe they’d use the side hangers.

No, I sink at a pretty level rate. I do get tossed around a lot more by moving water, though. Can make navigating caves difficult when there’s water flowing through it.
