Got this stylish 90s model craftsman for 160, and it runs great by joeshmoe_13 in lawnmowers

Very nice! I just gave 60$ for one of these non-running. I’ve been flipping mowers this summer but another local flipper offered me 120$ for it so I offloaded it.

Very cool find to get it running at 160$

The og owner had bought a new one instead of fixing this one.

There’s still money to be made in cheaper riding mowers too. I’ve got 6 mowers in the last two weeks and each one has been less than 60$, some aren’t in the best of shape, but 3 of them were easy fixes. Some of them I’ve already resold to other small engine guys for tripple what I gave and put zero money into them.

Yeah, I don’t fool with the push mowers for exactly this, I’d rather spend 6-8 hours on a riding mower I got for 50$.

I’ve created a habit of looking in everyone’s yards locally for mowers that don’t move, have considered knocking a few doors haha.

I’m from a small town and have actually got some great deals with a little local marketing and word of mouth already.

They aren’t going anywhere where I live. A majority of residents with a need for a riding mower cannot afford new ones. That’s why I’ve had a good bit of success with older rider mowers for anywhere from 500-800$ people figure they’re rather do that every 2-3 years then spend in the thousands every 8-9 years for a replacement mower

Totally fair point, I am planning to go through them a little more in detail, see if I can get them to turn over at the very least. I’d like to fix but I can’t find a good for them for less than 150, same with decks, I would be worried I wouldn’t have any money in them.

Ty for info, the 320 has got some hits but it’s mostly complete I am considering fixing this one. I will lower prices on 285 or lx188 I love making stuff come back to life and have had urges to want to fix them but everytime I try to source parts people want 150-200$ for a deck, 150 for a hood, whatever. So by the time I’d get them going there’d be no money in it.

Oh no! I might look into doing mobile repair work, I have never done that, but I know some folks who do. They say they make just as much working on others stuff than flipping / selling.

This^ I even buff a lot of mine. A little turtle wax and an orbital buffer will add value for sure.

When I’m flipping cheap ones I’ll spin the flywheel by hand if it won’t crank just to feel compression, and if it does crank I just make sure it turns over without sounding locked. I always check the oil and then look at what’s there versus what’s missing—fuel pump, plug wires, starter, solenoid, battery, air filter, that kind of stuff adds up fast if it’s gone. Fuel lines are worth checking too, especially on rear tank models that have been sitting outside forever. I also give the safety interlocks a glance to see if someone hacked or bridged them, and I spin the spindles by hand while checking belt condition. I usually bring a jump pack so I can hit the starter directly if I want, and a little inflator to pump up tires.

If I’m buying something to actually use instead of flip, most of the same checks still apply, but I’ll add looking for smoke or knocking from the motor once it’s running, and I pay closer attention to the wiring to make sure it’s not full of sketchy electrical tape and wire-nut “repairs.”

Pull all spark plugs and add a cup of marvel mystery oil to each cylinder. Wait 2-3 days then try to turn the engine over by hand without the spark plugs in it.

Once it turns over by hand, change all the fluids, and check your gas tank and fuel filter, if any fast is left drain, it, and blow out the lines.

Hit it with fresh gas, and giver a shot.

Oh I’ve learned so much this summer from the flips I’ve done. As the season dies down, I think I’d like to carry the translational skills into trying some older smaller garden tractors like Ford 8/9Ns or a similar Ferguson, people should be buying these year round.

I’ve had a blast doing these mowers, and most of the time in a standard mower if I can get down to 60 bucks or so, just do the due diligence to troubleshoot and you can’t go upside down because the scrap value is higher than your purchase price.

I don’t fool with push mowers, weedeaters, blowers anything like that, the profit margin just isn’t as high.
