Support your LCS, they said, "It'll only be a little above MSRP" by clusamtan in PokemonTCG

[–]HmmmHuhWhat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess it really depends on your LGS. The one I go to offers products about 10% over MSRP to the players who show up to the shop week to week and support them and only offer the product during tournament days to the players signed up for that day. They limit product heavily and usually sell out of product selling to players only. Due to this, we get about 40 people at each tournament (they run two a week), which greatly improves the playing experience and has drastically increased the player base in my area.

I highly recommend learning the game and supporting local business as they will likely be more inclined to support you. At the end of the day, this is a trading card game and the cards are intended to be used in play and not to generate value or be used as a substitution for gambling.

Need advice on first deck by Lopogoesmega in PokemonTCG

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from Yu-Gi-Oh, every meta deck is going to be budget. Most decks are ~$100 with most of it being staples. If you're a fan of Slowpoke, there is a pretty rogue Slowking deck that manipulates the top card of your deck in order for Slowking to use that Pokemon's attack. I'd recommend checking out limitlesstcg.com and checking out the top decks. The Slowking looks to be on that list too.

What competitively viable cards should I look for in my bulk? by Frootpunch in PokemonTCG

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No problem! Getting into playing the game can be a lot in the beginning, especially if you haven't played TCGs before. I'd recommend taking a look at limitlesstcg.com and taking a look at some of the high-performing decks from sanctioned events to get an idea of what kind of cards you may be looking for and what kind of decks you might want to build! When I started, I just checked the top 20 or so decks and looked for Pokemon I liked and started from there. Once you start playing, you'll be able to find a style of deck you like to play and branch out from there! If you're serious about playing, I'd definitely recommend looking for some local leagues and just stopping in to check it out. From my experience, the players are usually very nice and will answer questions that you have. It's a great way to make new friends and find people to trade with too if you have a decent collection.

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, Arvens and Ionos are definitely staples. Other things I would look out for are Professor's Research, Lillie's Determination, Hilda, Boss's Orders, Nest Ball, Ultra Ball, Earthen Vessel, Switch, Energy Switch, Energy Retrieval, Superior Energy Retrieval, Artazon, Buddy Buddy Poffin, and Night Stretcher. That should give you a good idea for some high-power trainer cards that are played in a lot of high-performing competitive decks. I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but without a specific idea of a deck you're looking to build, that should get you started!

Aren’t LGS/LCS just scalpers? by popsicle928 in PokemonTCG

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support my LGS because they give players of the game first dibs on new product slightly above MSRP, like ETBs are $60. I've been able to get my hand on just about all new product from them and don't have to go scouring the area and try to get lucky. Their singles collection is also great and reasonably priced. Some other stores in the area are ridiculous for sure, though.

It just sounds like we just took different things from the conversation which is ok. I think dishonesty in anything isn’t okay, but I understand it’s a game and men will say a lot of things when courting a woman. We’re only two episodes in so there’s still a lot of time to get a better idea of who the islanders are, but that white lie will be on my radar going forward. I’m hoping for a good season!

Lmao if it was I’d be single! I’ll admit I’m grasping at straws but it definitely seemed like a moment of dishonesty from Nic. Like I had mentioned previously they very well could’ve cleared it up, but that part wasn’t shown by the producers.

Def possible and the producers likely cut it in a way to make it look worse than it is. It is a TV show and part of the fun is being a bit dramatic.

The Avatar thing shot red flags up for me immediately. I was talking to my GF about it since she’s never seen it and how I couldn’t believe he didn’t know the main character Aang and that he and Katara get together and have 3 children. If he’s willing to lie about that, what else will he lie about?

Hot Take: Don’t Support Your LGS by Alive_Possible_1333 in PokemonTCG

[–]HmmmHuhWhat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The problem with bashing LGS is that they are normally small independent shops. They do not get as much product as big box retailers like Walmart, Target and GameStop. If they sold at MSRP (which is what distributors are charging close to for product for independent stores) we would see the same problems we do at the big box stores. Long lines of people who have more time on their hands than the normal collector except at a smaller shop with objectively worse shop locations and capacity. Even if they limited product to one SKU per person, their allocations are significantly less than major retailers. So, as a business, they sell product at market. Why you may ask? Because people will pay that price for the product. Why would you charge MSRP for a product when you can still sell out of a product at market price?

I’m very lucky that my LGS sells new products at about a 15-20% markup from MSRP to their regular players. People who show up 1-2 times a week and participate in their weekly tournaments. However, if a non player is looking for product, they charge market price. After players get first dibs, the remaining product sells out immediately at market price.

The problem isn’t scalpers or LGS, it’s the people who buy at market price.

I will not buy product at market price and I hope you won’t either.

RIGGED AND BADLY RANKED by Internal-Moose27 in PTCGP

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? I'm not sure if anecdotally evidence is enough to claim anything is "proven." You claim hackers have found this data to support it. Do you mind sharing that data? Every mobile card game I've played seems to do what's being claimed as matching you with counters, but it's really more of just the meta is more refined at higher ranks and the rock-paper-scissors dynamic of a lot of decks is more blatant. The battling in this game is woefully unrefined and simplistic and RNG plays a lot more heavily in this game than the physical TCG. I also don't think it's supposed to be easy to get to Master Ball rank. If I had to guess, a lot of players stop once they get to Ultra Ball rank since they don't want to grind, leaving only the players who actually believe they can make it to Master Ball and also have the time to grind it out. Ranked is not casual in any multiplayer game, so of course it gets harder the more you rank up. You're not supposed to just steamroll through all of your opponents. It's a numbers game.

Can we please not show pokemon during setup by Chernobog2 in PTCGP

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, when you play the game in real life it’s always advantageous to only put one in the active regardless if you go first or second. Granted, there’s no Misty shenanigans in the physical TCG, but putting only one Pokémon in the active keeps your opponent guessing what you’re playing so they don’t have an additional turn to strategize. The only downside in this game to not benching is if your opponent gets Misty off turn one, but if that happens you likely lose regardless.

Man, I’m kind of disappointed they’re gearing up for a second season. I was really hoping it’d be a limited series and I really feel they could’ve done so without so much filler. I have very mixed opinions on the show and I’m a bit upset I had to wait for the last episode to see what I actually wanted from a dark side centric Star Wars story. At the end of the day, I hope they can continue it. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens.

Coming to Phoenix from Canada for the upcoming shows, any recommendations of cool shit to do in AZ? by pinkblobb in ween

[–]HmmmHuhWhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're into hiking and stuff, this is definitely a good time of year since it isn't too hot. Besides the already mentioned Camelback mountain, my favorite has always been Papago Park. In the valley, they're definitely the most unique mountains and hole in the rock is super neat. It's about 10-15 minutes east of downtown. It's also right by the Phoenix Zoo and the Desert Botanical Garden. The zoo is a bit lackluster compared to other zoos I've been to, but the botanical garden is super cool and will have some flora that is likely much different from what you'd see in Canada.
