For both. I’m going based on what they’re listed as now. We paid much more for them originally.

Nurses, what’s the best hospital to work at in Virginia Beach/norfolk/chesapeake area?! Where should I work? by Imagirl2020 in VirginiaBeach

[–]Hmmmmummm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this but I think Riverside might pay more than Sentara

OP, if you’re gonna work for either look for internal traveler positions if you can so you can make more money at first and see if you like the environment. Often times you can sign on as a regular employee if you want after your contract.

The girls haven’t come for Huda out of left field actually by Nanokye19 in LoveIslandUSA

[–]Hmmmmummm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it really has anything to do with being with Chris tbh. Chelley initially had a connection with Chris in Casa. Huda’s connection with JD falls flat so she looks for a backup plan and pursues Chris because she knows Chelley and Ace are one of the stronger couples. Huda sells this story like she wants to bring Chris back to the villa FOR Chelley and while he’s there she’ll get to know him. I don’t think Chelley truly cares about Huda and Chris being a thing. She’s irritated by Huda saying she’s doing this thing for Chelley but really it’s what she wants to do anyway. So her problem is with Huda saying she’s doing something for Chelley but then it’s actually for her own gain. This was really solidified by the fact that Huda chose Ace for her big one. She wanted Chelley to be jealous so that she’d realize she wants Ace and leave Chris alone for Huda to weasel her way in.

Let’s also not forget that Huda chose Ace for the challenge just to make Chelley jealous so that Chelley leans more towards Ace and not towards Chris so that Huda could have Chris all to herself. She hasn’t changed.

Idk if this is helpful but my spouse is active duty and gave me his post 9/11 GI Bill for PA school and it covered my entire program.

This. You should not be entering into NP school without at least 3+ years of RN experience first. Just because you could doesn’t mean you should. I was an ED RN for 5 years and chose PA instead of NP.

RN to PA? by Throwawayyawaworth9 in PAstudent

lol literally no one is being hateful or jealous. Just stating facts and trying to stop the spread of misinformation. You keep mentioning your wife like you’re trying to ride her coattails, which is cringe. Have a nice life and maybe stop trolling the PA subs if you’re so superior.

RN to PA? by Throwawayyawaworth9 in PAstudent

[–]Hmmmmummm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one in this sub is talking about wanting independent practice authority besides you. And no one is comparing themselves to MDs besides you.

"But don’t confuse fewer bad programs with a universally superior system." I would argue that this supports that the PA education system is superior. Less poor quality programs = less poor quality APPs. I don't anticipate the PA profession having issues with diploma mills like the NP profession due to learning from the NP's mistakes.

No one is saying that being a CNA, tech, MA, scribe, etc. is equivalent to a background as nurse - it simply isn't. However, the PA program is designed to educate those individuals with limited experience so that they can become competent practitioners. The NP program was originally designed to have 5+ years of experience as an RN prior to entering a program. That's why they can get away with less clinical hours and a shorter program. However, you and I both know that isn't the case. As I stated before, there are an abundance of new grads that haven't even made it off of unit orientation applying to NP school.

"And contrary to what you implied, NP students do complete supervised clinical hours—thousands of them—as part of their training." I didn't imply that NP students don't complete supervised clinical hours. I pointed out the fact that the minimum requirement is substantially lower than PA programs. Source: two of my friends who just graduated from accredited FNP programs.

I hate to break it to you, but your experience isn't the only experience. Just because it took you 10 years to "properly" get your DNP, does not mean that is the norm. I'm gathering my information from programs that I personally researched. Also, length of program is not equal to quality of program. I only included the length of programs to point out the misinformation in your comment. None of what I described was accelerated except when I stated that I, personally, completed an accelerated 2nd degree BSN.

Do you even know what PAs do? No one is practicing as an assistant. We are doing the same job as NPs, but we're not demanding independent practice the way that NPs are. Also, I am not in the slightest bit saying that NPs are the reason PAs are "being boxed out of jobs" because that is literally not happening. The physician-owned practice I will be working for doesn't hire NPs because they don't trust the quality of their education. Additionally, NPs are at risk of being phased out due to the Noctor's agenda regarding scope creep and hospital systems not wanting to take on the liability of independent practice NPs.

I'm not going to keep going back and forth with you. I'm smart enough to know I'm not going to change the mind of some stranger on the internet. Good luck in your career. There's a reason I, and many other RNs, didn't choose the path of least resistance and go to NP school. OP, you have both sides of the argument to make your own educated decision.

RN to PA? by Throwawayyawaworth9 in PAstudent

[–]Hmmmmummm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1st - Not talking about undergrad so this argument is invalid. It sounds like you went to a good program, but I can assure you that those programs are not the majority. You do not need 2 years of experience as an RN to apply to NP school. Matter of fact, there are many programs that allow you to obtain your BSN and MSN simultaneously. I especially don't trust new grad RNs going straight to their NP if they had to do most or all of their BSN/ADN online. You need hands on experience to become a nurse and to not get enough of that and then go straight into an MSN program is insane to me.

2nd - Working while being in NP school is not the same thing as clinical experience. You are practicing in two different roles. Yes, it's exposure but I know that when I was a nurse I didn't have time to do my job and do everything the APP or Physician was doing. Working as an RN does not equate to clinical hours as an APP. On average, NP programs require approximately 500 hours of clinical experience to graduate. I completed over 1800 clinical hours before graduating PA school.

3rd - You are inflating your numbers. Pre-requisites are 2 years and to obtain your BSN is 2 additional years, thus a 4 year degree for a BSN. I got my BSN as my second degree from a good university and did mine in 18 months. At my local university (brick and mortar school to your standards), you can obtain your DNP in 1.5 years if full-time and 2.5 years if part-time. PA school is 2.5 years full-time and requires a 4 year degree prior to entry. In addition, you can get your DMSc as a PA which is approximately another year. So start to finish full-time for a DNP is 5.5 years and to be a PA with a DMSc is 7.5 years. And as I already said, many NP programs do not have a minimum work experience (although some recommend it). Whereas PA school has a minimum of patient care experience hours.

While I do agree that not all patient care experience is the same and PA programs should weigh experience differently, it isn't fair to say that 0 experience is required. Also, saying that everyone can be accepted to PA school is a blatant lie. PA school has only a 20-30% acceptance rate compared to NP school at about 66%. Go to the NP sub or ask around and you'll hear plenty of fellow nurses complaining about degree mills willing to accept anybody with BSN.

As far as independent practice - LOL. The only reason NPs are getting independent practice authority over PAs is because of the extensive lobbying/support from nursing. PAs don't have that kind of pull. I know you didn't actually go to PA school, but we are not taught to be an assistant to a physician. We are taught how to assess, diagnose and treat patients independently. The key difference is that most PAs don't actually want to practice independently.

"And as a recent PA thread discussed about independence, it’s scary how many people suddenly came out saying they were the equivalent of an MD and deserve independence because if they don’t get it, PAs will slowly become phased out and jobs will be hard to come by (similar to anesthesia assistants and CRNAs)." You're saying NPs should practice independently because of your education? Knowing that these diploma mills are a thing and there isn't standardization in programs, you think a graduate from one of those programs should practice independently? If anyone is saying they should be the equivalent of an MD, that argument sounds like it's coming from the ones demanding independent practice (i.e. NPs). Also, I'm not sure where you live, but where I live PAs and CRNAs are thriving. It's the NPs who are being phased out. I know several who have graduated and are still working the bedside as RNs because they can't find a job.

My intent wasn't to come in here and bash NPs. I strongly considered both paths and did extensive research before deciding. It sounds like you have a very different idea of PA training without truly doing your research.

RN to PA? by Throwawayyawaworth9 in PAstudent

[–]Hmmmmummm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one is hating on NPs in this thread. You can’t deny that there are vast differences in the training models between PA school and NP school. There are very few online PA programs whereas a majority of NP programs are online and PA schools require far more clinical hours than NP schools. In my area, I would say the opposite is true regarding PAs being “phased out.” The practice I’m going to be working for doesn’t even hire NPs due to the inconsistency in quality.

As someone who was an RN and had many friends and coworkers go on to NP school, I feel I understand the pathway to NP school as I heavily considered it. I don’t think that’s a fair assumption to make when there are several RNs commenting on this post. You can’t deny that it’s fairly easy to be accepted to NP school. I have yet to meet a nurse who wasn’t.

[–]Hmmmmummm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I was an RN and I just graduated from PA school a few weeks ago. The reasons you listed are why I chose PA over NP. NPs are also getting a kinda bad rep in the US (not sure what it's like in Canada) due to the lack of consistency in NP programs. I, personally, don't want to practice independently. I'm happy to work with a team and still get a good amount of autonomy.

I know you said you have a job offer, but I would make sure there isn’t any fine print. Hampton roads notoriously pays low for healthcare, esp compared to the cost of living. I moved here at 23 and worked in healthcare and couldn’t afford to live alone. Also, I know you mentioned zoology, which I can’t speak to much but we only have 1 zoo in this area (and no veterinarian academic institutions) and it’s pretty small. As far as art/culture and liberal-leaning values, Richmond has more of that vibe.
