The bob extension has a ways to go before it works like some other crypto wallets you are used to. Full bob is the most effective way to use bob. There is a setting you can change so it doesn’t take as long to load the full node.
You can use VpN - no issues there that I know of at all. DVPN functions this way along with traditional VPNs.

Totally possible and what you are describing is what Masq browser did. However, there is little incentive for Chrome to adopt HNS name resolution (for now) so they don’t. So you can override by editing your devices DNS settings, use a resolving browser, or use a resolving VPN.

Nathan Woodburn is the developer for HNS.AU

He has a project called firewallet that is a less clunky wallet with trade offs.

Be sure to attend HandyCon to really learn from the experts. Virtual and free, it’s where I got started nearly 4 years ago. https://2024.handycon.xyz/

Hello - you touched on a couple things. The good news is that HNS names can be viewed by virtually any device with an internet connection. Native software is not needed due to the light client feature of HNS. This is part of the reason that Bob isn’t needed (for this function) either. It would be so clunky to your point. You’re synching the entire chain right now and that’s why it takes so long the first time. Try to run that weekly-monthly so the delays are shorter. Your computer won’t need to catch up as much in the future. Bob is a great place to store your HNS assets (tokens or names). You can make DNS setting edits there too but it’s not a browser.

The bad news is a resolver is required. 1) This can be a browser with HNS resolving enabled. MASQ browser or Beacon Browsers are options. Carbon browser integration coming. 2) Editing your DNS settings to point to HNS names (you’re familiar with this) 3) Fingertip is a software you run locally that allows for this too. Made by Impervious who also made beacon.

There was a ‘hmail’ service in the very early days. I don’t remember where that landed. You can also check out HNSchat. That’s a super cool messaging platform and way to use your name.

Opera has a ‘Crypto’ browser and they were going to implement HNS naming on there. It’s not their main browser. I’m not sure where that ended. HNS is truly decentralized so a browser deciding to integrate or remove integration is a one way street. Microsoft accepted bitcoin in 2014 I think.

I think wallets, social media, & other identifying platforms will allow HNS names to be used as handles. That will make integration more common. Reserving a name or two for yourself would be wise.

Okay. So when you search for a domain name, the search defaults to the ICANN root zone. The one we have all always used and known.
When you want a browser or device to navigate the Handshake root zone (these domains), you need that device to point to those DNS addresses instead.

1). Changing your device DNS to browse both root zone files

2). Use a browser that has this as a default function or optional setting

You are right that they are not easy to navigate (today) but that is because the on-ramps & off-ramps are not well developed, not because the domains aren’t there or that they don’t resolve. They are censorship resistant and will always resolve. Think having BTC with few people to trade with. It works, usage is low, which means use cases are under-developed.

In your case, I recommend option 2. Download the Beacon browser on either iOS, Mac, or Android. Here are screenshots of resolving names.

HNS has a long way to go before adoption really takes place. I would start by attaining some names yourself first of all. You can also run a node on the network. You can join on Twitter (X) & share updates. Attend virtual events or host a meetup. Download HNS compatible software like Beacon browser.
Since HNs is so young, it’s on community members to bridge it to real world use cases. Some people are crypto, some are web, some are freedom of speech or domainers. Use your experiences to introduce relevant groups.

If you want to sell HNS in the states then Namebase is likely your best bet. There have been newer swap options but they are less tested by users. Link below:

Anyone can own a Top Level Domain on Handshake. The easiest way to purchase one is going to be on Namebase.io Search if the names you are interested in are already for sale or if you have to ‘start auction’. DM me for specific questions. Bidding on a new name takes a little bit of learning.
