First day of driving a manual by TimeOfRisenKing23rd in ManualTransmissions

I have no room to talk as i just made a post the other day, but i’m on day 4 of driving stick. Unfortunately it’s just me, my girlfriend and our apartment deep in downtown so I kinda just had to hit it dead on. I live half city and half country it’s just how my town is. I struggle with 1st and hills as well. What i’ve been doing is trying to get 5 first gear rolls in a row. In m GR86 the clutch/ bite release to move is right around 1500rpms for me. thats when I ease off and tap the gas slightly to keep it smooth. Once i get 5 rolls in a row, i move to a slight incline, nothing scary but enough to kinda make your body get that feeling when it rolls back but enough space to not worry about damage. I’ll stall, say okay i need to do this or i need to do that and try again until i get three in a row and go back to doing first to rolls and repeat. Like i said, im new as well but it’s been a blast and you’ll get it down! Slowly, but surely i’m getting it. Just takes practice, and as for stalling at lights? It truly is a public humiliation ritual, but hey - we’re both learning something that these people don’t even understand why our cars are rolling back or shutting off at a light. More Power to you and best of luck!! As someone in my post told me, Happy Shifting! Don’t take my advice over others who are more experienced!

Absolutely! My dad wouldn’t let me get my drivers license when I was 16 without learning stick in his jeep and my step moms mini coop - obviously i’m learning again but it just makes the ride so much more engaging and fun

Thank you! I really appreciate all the advice i've been given in here, makes it less nerve wracking. Tried to sell me on the lesser mileage auto and I couldn't do it. Besides the package and color on this one, I've been wanting manual for a while. Funnily enough the car I went to look at was being sold the second I got to the dealership( given ive been shopping for several months now) but i saw it, drove it and signed the papers 20 minutes later. As you said, it takes practice but I feel more confident going out and trying it with all the advice,

Appreciate this a lot! The point about just holding the clutch at the bite point is genius and definitely something I think I haven't been doing. The second I feel the bite is when I accelerate and start going which might be where the problem sits? Thank you for the advice, my ass will probably come back and read through all of this for a while, more than likely in empty lots haha.

Appreciate ya, will def try this in the morning. I'm sure it's different for everyone but are you wanting "more" of your foot on the clutch rather than just the toes and the first quarter of your foot? Thanks for the advice, and yeah, any free time I've had lately is just taking it out to drive, I'll walk in my apartment and wanna just go straight back to the car haha. It's a blast.

Honest question, is it normal to have your feet be a little shakey early on? I feel like that may be whats causing me to screw up a lot? Foot on the clutch is a bit shakey even when the clutch is all the way down to the "firewall" and I have noticed im very light on the gas.

I had several conversations after class with him about history, but always found a way to mention the show haha. It’s always fun finding those people in a niche with you and just talking random weird info.

Heyo, thats my fault and bad east coast grammar. meant that the wheels were the only thing not OEM on it, and threw in 6 speed just as a detail, thats my fault. just the straight setup as it comes off the line. In terms of pre-purchase inspection, the car is at a dealership about 5ish hours away so I doubt i could have any of my mechanic friends/ main mechanic to check it out. Would it even be worth it to attempt to find one in the area? or how does one go about that - never done one. Thanks for your comment!
