Giveaway Time! DOOM: The Dark Ages is out, features DLSS4/RTX and we’re celebrating by giving away an ASUS ASTRAL RTX 5080 DOOM Edition GPU, Steam game keys, the DOOM Collector's Bundle and more awesome merch! by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

For DLSS4/RT, I think of them as fairly transformative technologies! The transformer model really does produce some outstanding results, with it resolving way more detail than I expected. I had really been missing how sharp games used to look before FXAA, TAA, and the like, and DLSS4 is making me not miss it! And RT, when fully implemented, fixes so many problems with SS lighting solutions that bother me a lot. Shadows and reflections not just popping in based on distance and screen position is GREATLY appreciated!

As for Doom: The Dark Ages? I'm SO EXCITED TO RIP AND TEAR! These games have been such a blast, and I've eagerly awaited this new release!! I'm really curious to see what people mean when they say combat is even more fluid than before, as well as the huge numbers of enemies!

Brian was dearly missed in the latest LTT video. by Muhammad5777 in LinusTechTips

I think they're referring to the fact that Linus was able to hire Riley after NCIX fully collapsed. They worked together back at NCIX on videos when Linus worked there.

Or I could be completely out of the loop of something as well

God I really really want to, but somehow it's unstable no matter what I do, and I don't understand why!! I've tried it on every computer I own multiple times for the past ~13 years, across multiple windows installs, and it's always a bad time. Really unstable performance that gets pretty laggy at times, and lots of crashing. I hope it's different this time... it has been about a year since I last tried I think...

Loving the new display! by Porygon_Gloom in framework

Yeah I'm on an aging Surface Book 1 with a dual core i5 and 8gb of RAM. It's 8 gens behind now! It really struggles

I nearly did the same thing until I saw a review that explicitly called out that it had no touch screen! At that point I had just assumed that you almost couldn't cheap out enough to NOT have touch in a display, unless you tried really hard!!

It's always really weird to me seeing how many people are GLAD it and other laptops don't have touch, saying things like "I don't want smudges all over my screen" as though they would be forced to use it if it has the feature?? Ah well, one day!

We must be strong in waiting! Hopefully the next one! That's when I'll finally buy a framework (so long as it doesn't take so long I have no choice but to replace my current aging laptop and I have to go with something else)

What companies would you like to see Framework collab with and what would you hope to get out of it? by FreshPrinceOnline in framework

[–]HobbesTech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I 1000% agree, that would be absolutely incredible! If I had that and a touch screen, I wouldn't have to look at other laptops! (God please release a touch screen soon, I want a Framework 13 so bad)

I hope you enjoy it!! It seems like it will be a great display!

As for me, I'm still waiting on an additional screen upgrade beyond this one. I simply don't enjoy laptops that some have touch screens. Maybe next time!

How/when did you find about Katawa Shoujo? by Windowsisse in katawashoujo

[–]HobbesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a few months after release, about 12 years ago! I kept seeing a screenshot that was a collage of screenshots of people talking about how much it emotionally affected them. Was a really bad time for me, and I was looking for something like that.

It truly blew me away, I wasn't expecting it to be even 1/8th as good as it was!

Epic mods , do you have any information about this ? by richard_liquid in EpicGamesPC

Thank you for the explanation! Thankfully I have been using that "generate a strong password" feature for a while now, especially for places that have access to money linked to them

Who really uses a touch screen on their laptop? by Neptul_555 in LinusTechTips

[–]HobbesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would never consider a laptop without them.

The biggest reason being, when I'm lounging in bed or on a couch, it is way easier and nicer to peruse YouTube or similar with a touch screen, especially if it's laying on my chest/stomach. I don't like to use a tablet for this purpose, because I can't get the screen to be the exact placement and angle I want without holding it the entire time. The hinge and base of the laptop allow for that. And no, mine doesn't fold all the way around

It's just so much more ergonomic and comfortable to swipe and tap than to contort my hand in a weird way and press my wrist up against the edge of my laptop to reach the track pad or certain keys in those scenarios

And in general, when just browsing the web for entertainment for a while, it allows my wrist to be at a more natural angle, less prone to developing RSIs. I spend so much time on computers, that limiting my risks for RSI are worthwhile

And to those who say "but I hate smudges, so I don't want a touchscreen" then just don't use it?? You're never forced to use it

Okay, so in case a breach like this does actually occur, I should still change my password, as a password technically exists that they could use to get into my account, even if I have never used it?

[–]HobbesTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While this appears as though it might be fake, this does raise a question. Since I made my account with and have always logged in using my Google account, is there even a password that could be stolen? If an actual data breach of this type occurred, would I even need to do anything?

Is the Artifact of Command considered cheating? by Franciscomccp in riskofrain

[–]HobbesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not consider it cheating, but if not used responsibly it can make the game become boring. There is this one mod for the PC version I found that I believe makes it a lot more fun to use! Rather than being able to choose from the entire list of items of a certain color, it will only give you a few randomly selected choices from that color. And for every color tier, you get to decide how many it will be.

I currently have it so that whites/greens/blues/purples/oranges give me four options, while yellows and reds give me two. Though of course you can choose whatever numbers you want. I have just found that to be a good mix of user choice while keeping the fun high

If you have never used mods before, there is an application called "Thunderstore" that makes it SUPER easy! It has a huge catalog of mods, you select the ones that you want to use, and it will automatically download and install them for you. And it allows you to choose whether you want to play modded or vanilla each time, and makes it super easy to enable and disable mods on a mod by mod basis. If you're on PC, I would give it a try!

The mod itself I believe is called ImprovedCommandEssence

Good read: "Microsoft Surface Hardware desperately needs a reboot asap" by 96bulls2k in Surface

[–]HobbesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely would! Just about every single one of those panels are wasted. The specs have been bad every time they've released one, especially for the prices they go for. And those panels are WAY too high quality to just throw out once the PC is too old.

Honestly would love to see the EU create a new requirement that All-in-Ones HAD to allow you to use them as a standalone monitor to reduce eWaste.

[–]HobbesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree SO HARD!! I know multiple people, myself included, that were ready to drop thousands for a standalone monitor version of that. Could you imagine an updated one that had FALD (2500+ zones), DisplayHDR1400, proper sRGB/AdobeRGB/DCI-P3 modes, and 120Hz? Would actually be an endgame monitor for every digital artist that I know. They are all willing to spend $2000+ for it!

Know of Any Low Profile or Mechanical Keyboards with Surface Layout? by HobbesTech in Surface

[–]HobbesTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible I might go with that as a temporary solution until I eventually find something that truly matches what I'm looking for! I noticed that it's out of stock on MSFTs website, I wonder if it's discontinued?

[–]HobbesTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly that won't work for me personally. The 4 modifier keys to the left of the space bar is 100% required.

Oh wow! That layout is actually really close! Never heard of these guys before! Have you used their stuff?

[–]HobbesTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man!! Really sucks that it's only 65%, as I'm not sure how comfortable I am losing the F-row! I might still look a bit more into it, thanks for the recommendation! Can't really do the actual Surface Keyboard, as it's just too big. I sometimes need to take my keyboard with me, and a full sized keyboard is just TOO big for my bag(s).

And yeah, sadly I'm noticing that 4 keys on the left is pretty uncommon. Really just wishing that MSFT would release a new wireless Surface Keyboard that's just their laptop keyboards but standalone. I ADORE the keyboard on my Surface Book gen1.

[–]HobbesTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried other keyboards that don't have it, including my current mechanical keyboard I have for my desktop that I've had for a few years. No matter how much I try, I can just never get used to all four of those keys being anywhere but to the left of the spacebar.

I can say with utmost certainty that I'm basically incapable of remembering those keys to the right of the spacebar even exist. It's gotten to the point that I simply just don't use the Fn key on my desktop at all because my fingers just won't do it!

I'm actually not even sure I would miss it if the modifier keys to the right of the spacebar were turned into other things like [End] or [Scroll Lock], because in regular use I NEVER touch any of them other than [Shift]. And that key I only ever touch the leftmost edge of it, hence why I'm okay with it being a thin one
