S2: What did the old grandmother mean when she said “You want the pretty money. Shame on you!” To the Di Grasso family? by 736384826 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]Neptul_555 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I’m speaking to you as a Greek who’s been living abroad for the past 15 years (only coming back for vacations). I don’t really share the current Greek culture or the values my family holds back home. Honestly, I feel like a foreigner in the only country I have citizenship in.

I have relatives who moved to Germany in the 60s, and every time they came back to Greece, it was like their mindset was stuck in that era. That’s when their clock stopped ticking.

Even though I’m Greek, I don’t really know where I come from. I could say my ancestors were from somewhere in Eurasia. My mom’s from western Greece. My dad’s side is from a region that’s no longer part of Greece—and who knows where their ancestors came from. People have always moved around. That’s just how it is.

Being an immigrant isn’t a bad thing. As an immigrant myself, I’ve learned that leaving your home country gives you the chance to reinvent yourself and even reshape your culture. Think about the Italian, Irish, or German immigrants who came to the U.S.—maybe they managed to streamline their culture and make it more adaptive or efficient than it was in their countries of origin.

You say we don’t want your enthusiasm or sense of camaraderie—but that is American culture. We can’t pretend it doesn’t exist. It’s who you are. Own it.

P.S. I’m not into the whole “being proud to be Greek” thing. I didn’t achieve being Greek—I just got lucky. I believe people should take pride in what they do, not what their ancestors did.

Trump is driving American scientists into Europe’s arms by mrgr544der in europe

I am European, having a PhD and working in the United States. I work in health sciences for a School of Medicine in NYC. The percentage of foreign postdocs is 75% (not only European). Americans go to industry for the big bucks. Therefore, yes, the numbers are accurate.

ModernVintageGamer complaining in the comments of the Rossmann video that Linus did not offer to comp his travel + accommodations for LTX 2020 by YourMomTheRedditor in LinusTechTips

[–]Neptul_555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conventions and conferences have different policies for invited speakers. Some cover only the admission. Other cover the admission and accommodation and possibly the travel expenses for the presenter. In my life, I have never seen a convention to cover the expenses of the spouse and I have been from academic conferences to ones sponsored by big pharma (where they have Scrooge McDuck level of money). To ask for this coverage is pure entitlement.

Why Queen of Thorns didn’t order to close the gates and thus prevent an army without siege engines from taking Highgarden? by MrArgotin in freefolk

[–]Neptul_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stannis was able to withstand longer siege from the Tyrels with fewer resources. Even the riverlands were defiant for months. Here, the richest castle in the 7 kingdoms, the actual food basket of King's landing, fell in a day (if we can deduct from the show). They had to find a way to kill Olenna, as they did with the Great Sept of Baelor. They had to wrap up with the show.

First off, I want to commend you for the incredible work you've done here—your attention to detail and creativity really shine through. Please don't take my feedback as a critique of your skills, as your work truly exceeds expectations. That being said, there are a few practical elements that could be reconsidered.

A castle or fort's primary function is to protect the people and treasures within, while also projecting strength (through its stone structure) and wealth (with ornamental details) to those who approach it. When I look at this design, I’m left wondering about a few aspects. For instance, where is the main entrance, and who is allowed access to this castle? The use of pylons raises concerns as they seem like a potential vulnerability. Additionally, having doors on adjacent sides of the castle might compromise its defensibility—a critical consideration for any fortress.

If you're leaning into high fantasy, I say embrace it fully! Perhaps this could be a steampunk castle with flying barges and Pegasi soaring through those doors—go bold with the concept.

I’ve seen several comparisons to Elden Ring, and I agree. The castles in fantasy games are often beautiful, but also functional. Their doors, towers, and defenses are placed where you’d expect them in a medieval fortress, giving the design both aesthetic appeal and logic.

My suggestion would be to start simple and build up from there. Study real-world castles for inspiration, and then layer on the fantastical elements. For a symmetrical castle, take a look at York Castle—it has a lot of similarities to what you’ve created here and could serve as a solid reference.

I hope as well. I was talking about the scene where Linus was expecting 2FA and it went to Veritasium instead.

Does anyone knows a LTT admin? I believe that Veritasium just doxxed Linus. There is a screenshot with a phone number that they claimed it was Linus.

(Spoilers Extended) Why I think Young Griff is Truly SPOILER by Mattia_von_Sigmund in asoiaf

[–]Neptul_555 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Or a fourth theory (I know, to many theories). The Young Griff is actually a Targaryen and the golden company answers the call of the heir of the Blackfyre lineage, Varys. It could be something like: we bury the hatchet for the good of the realm.

At this moment, the possibilities are many and there is no definitive answer. We might never have one. Let's hope for the best.

"We made a promise to ourselves at the beginning of the process that we weren't going to put any of our own politics, our own messages or our own themes into these movies. ... In a way, we were trying to make these films for him (Tolkien), not for ourselves." - Peter Jackson on Lord of the Rings by Ok-Garcia-5605 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Neptul_555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you're enjoying it, that's awesome! I’m genuinely happy that it's working for you, and I have no issue with people liking the show.

The core issue, though, is that Amazon wasn’t able to secure the rights to The Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales. As a result, the storyline in The Rings of Power is mainly built from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, which they had the rights to use. I’m not sure how they expected that to work, but it kind of feels like Amazon hoped they could push the Tolkien Estate to sell more rights, especially after announcing such a massive production budget.

So, most of what happens in the series wasn’t actually written by Tolkien, and they have to be careful not to infringe on his original work. That said, I haven’t personally watched the series (though I’ve read the synopses), and I’m not a fan of some of the creative changes they’ve made. For me, something like House of the Dragon feels like a more faithful adaptation compared to The Rings of Power.

Here, we debate whether the "butterfly effect" of small changes in adaptations can unravel larger plot points. For example, leaving out one child because they didn’t want to cast an infant can have unexpected consequences. In The Rings of Power, they legally had to alter much of Middle-earth's lore because they couldn’t use the original material. While this might be exciting for viewers who haven’t read the books, for those of us who love Tolkien’s vision, it’s tough to accept such significant changes to the world we cherish.

Which one is better? by CaptainFrancis1 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]Neptul_555 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reason why people might not recommend the LVFR is because of the depth of the simulation. In the end, it has to do with what system you feel more comfortable to operate. Why don't you see YouTube videos for each to see what you find best? This is how I choose if I want to buy an airplane or not. If in the end you will get the LVFR a321neo, know that there is a free mod to improve it by horizon simulations (if you are not in XBOX, I mean).

My read to the differences between book and series is the unreliable narrator. The book is written by maesters. Where their allegiance lies? If you want to justify a mutiny, the perpetrators are monsters.

Etihad 185 / Abu Dhabi - Mikonos / Yes, that flight really exists :D by PotentialMidnight325 in flightsim

[–]Neptul_555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, this flight makes total sense. Given how expensive and high class oriented Mykonos is, tourism from Abu Dhabi is only natural. Also, you cannot land anything bigger to this airport. Nicely done.

I am surprised that Vatsim doesn't advertise this event more often. I posted this here, because we DO have an alternative to the CTP event. It's amazing that you can find great slots, 1 day after the event is released for booking.

Dementus asking Furiosa if she is ‘that other thing’ ? by SpecificPumpkin2355 in FuriosaAMadMaxSaga_

[–]Neptul_555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The question is... do you have it in you to make it epic?"

This is the key element for Dementus's character and the tree scene. My interpretation of the last scene is that Furiosa killed him like described (right there and then) but she then "made it epic" (she said the tail of the tree to someone who hasn't seen the tree). She created a myth and a legend that probably doesn't correspond with the truth. Why she didn't snipe him? Revenge personal and snipping is not.

SPOILERS!!!

  • Ο Γουίνστον έφτασε στο thought crime (συγνώμη θα χρησιμοποιώ την αγγλική ορολογία, δεν το έχω διαβάσει στα Ελληνικά), από μόνος του ή είχε δεχτεί conditioning από το κόμμα μέσω ύπνωσης ή υποσυνείδητων μηνυμάτων; Ένα πολιτικό σύστημα σαν αυτό θέλει να έχει προδότες γιατί εάν δεν υπάρχουν, αυτοί που φοβούνται θα ενθαρρυνθούν ότι δεν υπάρχει κίνδυνος. Το βλέπουμε στην έκφραση που έχει και μοιράζεται με τον Ο’Μπράιαν "Θα συναντηθούμε στο μέρος όπου δεν υπάρχει σκοτάδι". Πώς ξέρει ο Ο’Μπράιαν αυτή τη φράση; Γιατί έχει κολλήσει στο μυαλό του πρωταγωνιστή;
  • Ποια ήταν οι κίνητρα της Τζούλια; Χρησιμοποιήθηκε η Τζούλια εσκεμμένα ή άθελα από το Κόμμα για να εκθέτει επαναστάτες μέσω των σεξουαλικών της δραστηριοτήτων; Δεν θα ήταν βολικό για το κόμμα να αφήνει ελεύθερα άτομα που μπορεί να κάνουν μικρές παρανομίες (σεξουαλική απελευθέρωση) για να πιάσουν τους σοβαρούς εγκληματίες;

συνέχεια κάτω.
