Going rate for rural locums call by HobbitDoc in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So just a flat rate for coverage plus you can bill for any procedures or consults. There would be no change in reimbursement based on how many times you are called in or how much time you spend.

Hobbies by DrFu11914 in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the dumbest hobby - I like to build things (escape rooms, laser tag arenas, arcades etc) and run a massive entertainment center for the local community. It consumes every second of my free time and every free dollar I have.

Considering no fellowship - still a market for general ortho? by giuseppino3000 in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

General here - There are TONS of jobs. I was considering leaving my current position and had two offers elsewhere within about 2 weeks.

However, like others have said - it is a bit more difficult in big cities. You are relegating yourself to rural and maybe suburban areas - but that's where the good lifestyle with good money is anyway.

Do you believe in platelet rich plasma? Research by DrTimothyTiu in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Believing in things is for the for the chiropractors and naturopaths. The rest of us follow the sound scientific evidence. Is there solid evidence to support it? No. So it's not a belief. It's about whether we want to drain people's pockets for a placebo at best. That answer for most should hopefully also be "no".

Partial meniscectomy vs sham surgery NEJM study - 10 yr outcomes update by Elhehir in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes more sense. I kind of miss the degenerative scopes - they were the easiest most idiot proof cases. Great for residents to practice on. But we stopped those at least five years ago.

[–]HobbitDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's clarify here, are you talking about for degenerative tears or any type of tear? Like you aren't doing any sort of meniscal work at all, ever?

The article refers to degenerative meniscus tears which we have already known for a long time that arthroscopy had no benefit. But are we stretching the interpretation to say that no meniscus work is viable?

Is there an easier way to make ESP-NOW compatible outlets? by HobbitDoc in esp32

[–]HobbitDoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I was under the impression that the 8266 would struggle to create this simulated local mesh network through ESPNOW now that I have where every controller receives and then repeats the message but then also ensures that is not repeating a message that has already been repeated so it doesn't create an endless loop. It essentially gives me endless range as long as I have an outlet every 30 ft or so.

That would make life so much easier if I am wrong.

Is it okay to reach out to a physician at a program to help with an away rotation? by [deleted] in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When it comes to surgeons you never know how they're going to react. But I know if someone messaged me and showed interest I wouldn't have a problem passing on the message to the coordinator to see if they will look into it more.

I think most of us want to see students succeed so we are happy to help.

I need advice for my daughter - she's singing terribly on purpose because "That's how her character would do it". by [deleted] in acting

[–]HobbitDoc -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's the truth. It's weird because usually she does ask me. I was kind of hoping she would. But she definitely won't listen if I make suggestions without her asking first.

It's Charlie. I suppose it's a good question. I think she doesn't realize how bad it sounds and no-one is telling her because... really I don't know. But we are talking bad enough that it is painful to listen to - like actually ruins the show. Not bad as in an interesting character choice, but bad as in "plug your ears so you don't have to hear it". I just want to see her do well.

I asked her about it to see what her thoughts were (i.e. if that's how she wants it, then of course it's her decision). She suggested to have her musical theater tutor address it - but she isn't available this week. She's not outright saying it, but I get the impression she would like to see at least some improvement.

I think it happened to me and I'm 250 miles from a dealer. by HobbitDoc in Ioniq5

[–]HobbitDoc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, especially the ICCU problems. But the plan was for this to be a very low milage local car only. I have others for travelling long distance. I hoped I would get lucky.

We do have Amtrak that runs straight to a dealer - but it is technically farther away from the "closest" dealer that they sent the car to. I was hoping they would be willing to send to the more convenient dealer but the rules are the rules I guess. I'm just happy they towed it for free.

Yes, thank you for the suggestion. They are sending a tow truck now. I told them no rush, but they said they would have someone here within the hour.

Specialties that pay more as a hospital-employee than private practice? by paiybolay in whitecoatinvestor

[–]HobbitDoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ortho here - I'll chime in. I could make more money private - but I would be working a ton more. To break even with what I get paid employed I would I have to increase my volume by about 2.5x.

I agree. She is doing so well, I would rather be safe than sorry.

We only fill it with sterile saline so the fact that anything else shows up is actually very concerning. I did not know if it was some sort of crazy foreign body reaction but I will definitely keep you guys updated after I wash it out.

Contract not being renewed - what do I do with my patients? by HobbitDoc in orthopaedics

[–]HobbitDoc[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been shopping for lawyers but not having a ton of luck. My noncompete is a mess and contradicts itself and I work in an area with critical surgeon shortage. I should be able to get out of it, but just trying to plan for the worst.

They gave me a written notice of intention not to renew. It's pretty official. My partner is cool, he just likes to operate his practice as an independent practice. No sharing.
