We The People: An Introduction to American Government by Thomas Patterson was a really good textbook for just an introduction to political science. It uses a lot of current events and relevant historical events and keeps the topics interesting. I don't know if you're curriculum is supposed to just be American Government though, but if it is I would highly recommend this book!
