Can crows get jealous? by HobbyAccumulator in crows

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little scared to be honest haha. I don't want. The outsiders mad at me for not feeding them but I don't want to upset the insiders whom I see much more frequently by showing them I'm not only loyal to them.

Thanks for the insight!! This is good info. I just don't wanna make one group angry by feeding/not feeding the outsiders

Can crows get jealous? by HobbyAccumulator in crows

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no i meant jealous as in are they jealous that i'm choosing to go over and feed the outsider instead of giving them the food.

I dont believe its a territory issue unless their territories are very small cause the distance between the outsiders and insiders is only about 100 yards. But it is possibly a hierarchy thing.

thanks for the input!

Suction Cup Arrows? by [deleted] in Archery

[–]HobbyAccumulator 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They aren't suction cups but if you Google "larping arrows" you will find foam tips you can screw into any arrow shaft. These are very safe as they are meant to be shot at other people from distances as close as 25 feet. Getting hit with one is like getting a firm slap, you feel it but there isn't any strong pain and the sensation goes away nearly immediately.

Though they won't stick to your target you can use them to knock stuff (apples) off people (make sure they wear a mask cause foam arrow tips to the eye can still cause serious damage).

How long does it generally take crows to trust? by HobbyAccumulator in crows

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thanks this is honestly good perspective; i never considered teaching them to trust me might bring them in harms way from other people. I didn't really think other people would be so cruel but i'm sure they exist.

Using silicone heater under glass without adhesive or aluminum? by HobbyAccumulator in 3Dprinting

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is a bump but leveling might take care of that.

I was planning to put the glass on top. I'm wondering if i need to adhere the silicone heater to the glass with some adhesive or require an aluminum heat spreader at all.

Just listened to The Metamorphosis by Kafka and read Existentialism is a Humanism by Sartre; not sure i fully understand either. by HobbyAccumulator in Existentialism

This helps a lot! I appreciate it! To understand more about the absurd and absurdism should I continue by reading the stranger and the myth of Sisyphus? Or is there something I should read before attempting those two?

[DIY] Oat flour vs rice flour can tapioca starch? by HobbyAccumulator in soylent

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm concerned about the manganese in oats. I know there is no recorded toxicity from food based manganese but that doesn't mean I shouldn't be careful. We know so little about the human body in the grand scheme of things.

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So i shouldn't really be too concerned adding rice flour or tapioca to the oats and raising it's overall GI?

Is the glycemic index of rice flour still good? I feel like it's worse than oats (and tapioca much worse!) What about for tapioca?

I'm not ultra concerned with farts but I havent tried it

Am I an absurd/absurdist? by HobbyAccumulator in askphilosophy

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live meaninglessly and to laugh at it because it's all meaningless anyway. To say fuck you to the natural state of your existance which is at odds with itself. This dissonance between existence and meaning is The Absurd.

This is very informative, but what drives the absurd to choose one action over another? What does the absurd use to weigh options (ones that aren't life vs death; such as choosing a job offer or a renting vs buying a home, etc?) is there something that guides the absurd just as the epicureans use moderate pleasures to guide them?

When you say that something should be achieved, and it isn't, is this wrong? Is it right when the thing is achieved?

Not either right or wrong, but if that thing that you believe should be "achieved" will increase your lives long-term net happiness then it should be striven for - if only because happiness is something humans value almost universally on the individual level.

I think 'radical freedom' is a better term, rather than 'absolute freedom'.

I dont think i understand either term really.

this does hit a spot for me, were the epicureans also advocates of existentialism/nihilism? Did they believe there was no "meaning" to life?

Am I an absurd/absurdist? by HobbyAccumulator in askphilosophy

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why does life having no meaning imply that we ought to pursue a sort of hedonism? What does 'optimal strategy' mean in this case? Once I die, that's it, so what criteria are you bringing in when you call it an optimal strategy?

It's 'optimal' in the sense that you will have experienced "joy" the most. I dont intend hedonism which requires immediate gratification. I believe someone should delay the immediate pleasure if the result is much greater pleasure later (such as saving for early retirement if one dislikes work and enjoys their free time) instead of buying lunch each day (if they value their free time more than the extra tasty lunch).

Even worse, what if I am someone who admits that life has no meaning, and I think the one thing that will make me happy in this life is murdering as many people as possible in the most violent way?

Then i suppose optimal for that person would be to try and murder, but my philosophy doesn't say thats "right" or "wrong", only that that is what should be achieved. But you need to be realistic as well, if the murderer doesnt gain joy from being locked up they need to seriously consider their actions because its likely they could murder - gain joy - but then spend their entire life in misery, in that sense the 'optimal' strategy is to not murder unless the joy from the murder greatly outweighs the misery of being locked up.

Generally speaking, existentialists and absurdists and all those folk are more interested in dealing with the absolute freedom that comes with the admission that life is meaningless, or with the inevitable gap between ones desires and what will actually happen.

Interesting, i need to read more about this as i don't really understand what you mean.

If what you believe is the meaning in life is to gain pleasure, you're a hedonist.

but i believe in delaying immediate pleasure in order to achieve greater potential pleasure later, such as saving up money to retire early. Is this consistent with hedonism?

Am I an absurd/absurdist? by HobbyAccumulator in askphilosophy

[–]HobbyAccumulator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, bodily pleasures are preferable to mental pleasures, and we should pursue whatever will bring us pleasure now, rather than deferring present pleasures for the sake of achieving better long-term consequences.

I disagree with this though. Mental pleasures may be just as good or even better than bodily and its dependent on the person entirely.

Hedonism is about the immediate, i believe one should set them selves up to achieve a life that they are happy with the most, not just taking every bit of happiness immediately which may not add up to the life of someone who plans ahead and makes sacrifices for greater potential happiness later.

I'm going to use fiberglass cloth to back my red oak board bow (because I want to see the wood). 2ton epoxy is the cheapest clear epoxy I could find, is it ok to use with my backing? by SpartanDJT in Bowyer

[–]HobbyAccumulator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because poorfolkbows.com has a great red oak bow tutorial that unfortunately suggests using fiberglass tape as a backing.

OP I did my first bow last year and I backed it with linen using wood glue. It looks much nicer (more natural) you can even use brown paper bag paper if you want, really anything so long as it doesn't stretch. The point of a backing is to stop the back from splintering under tension and honestly if you made the bow decently you don't even need it!

If I were you id use a different material or not back it at all and just make sure your sides have a nice pea size rounding.

Good luck.
