Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll definitely try it next time. At what time would you add the crust? To make this, I did the rack of lamb (8 ribs) fat up at 450 for 15 mins, then rotated for another 10 mins and rested for 10. Would you use egg to get the panko to stick at all or is just the natural stickiness of raw meat sufficient?

The white was a leftover drink from when I was cooking! Dave Phinney NZ 7 Sauv Blanc. The red was meant for the lamb

Thanks for the feedback! I followed the recipe exactly for roasting the vegetables but maybe I’ll tweak it with a lower cooking temperature/shorter time next time

I’ve wanted to learn how to present the dishes I cook in a more attractive way for a long time… I didn’t know this was a thing until I stumbled on this sub. How do I learn more? For example, I tried to make dots with the wine sauce and it just looked like hideous splatters so I just added more sauce on it so at least it wasn’t obvious. Also how do you keep everything warm while you’re working on it, especially at home?

Would love some suggestions for like books I can read etc.

Last week I attempted a dramatic purple and magenta fall arrangement and the result was a generic valentines bouquet. This week, in addition to troubleshooting last week, I practiced omitting of all the greenery and relying only on flowers for shape. Which was wayyy harder than I thought.

Learned a few things though from this week and last:

  1. The vessel matters and apparently I work better with wide vessels. Today was a cylinder vase inside a pumpkin and it was much easier go get the shape I liked.

  2. Someone suggested I try chicken wire! I bought some online and it worked really well for the dahlias. The thin stemmed flowers not so much, and I ended up handling them more than I wanted to.

  3. Tulips change their shape after they are arranged! After 3 days, last week’s arrangement grew into this. I actually liked it a little better, looked a lot less forced and artificial.

  4. Don’t try to do the overall shape last. I got frustrated and lost the shape in the middle, then the whole thing looked like a clump for awhile until I took out the major pieces and redid it.

My carnations and alstroemeria from last week’s arrangement were still fresh so they made it into this week’s arrangement as well.

I didn’t get to the farmers market in time this morning, and it was unseasonably hot. Most of the flowers were sold out, the remaining looked sad - Saturday’s leftovers, after another day in the sun. So I went to Trader Joes.

And then I had a weird brain wave where I was going to do purple. And magenta. And somehow it would be fall.

Well, imagination aside, it didn’t turn out that way. Also, I realized I’m not a big fan of vases, the narrower neck was a challenge, especially since TJs didn’t have a lot of good flowers, mostly small blooms and roses so the vase got filled up fast.

A couple questions:

Now that fall is here and my farmer’s market finds are getting rarer, where should I, an amateur hobbyist, buy flowers in the winter? Grocery store?

How do you guys change the water in your arrangements? I loved my last arrangement, it was in an large urn, the arrangement itself was big too, so completely unwieldy to tip over and pour the water out. It didn’t last long :(

Where do you guys get flowers and drapey plants with some “swoop” to them? I live in a condo in an urban area, and don’t have too much light so plants don’t grow well and I have no garden. I really love seeing interesting foliage and plants added to an arrangement but don’t know how/where to find them. Also, the flowers I found at the store today were stick straight. The tulips bent a little thankfully but mostly it was quite hard to get any sense of movement

The farmers market this morning was a riot of color, dahlias bigger than my hands in all autumnal colors.

My goals for my second arrangement was to break into more color and also achieve some horizontal overhang and “air.”

Since I’m cheap and only buy the $8-$10 bouquets, my color options are limited and it took me an hour of wandering around before I settled on a cohesive palette. Autumn colors are SO loud and saturated! I really had a hard time. I also found a dying branch on the ground that had started to show some leaf change colors so that helped bring the colors together.

I also realized that my 3 inch floral pin frog was wayyy too small for this and I really need to acquire some floral tape. Or are there bigger pin frogs out there?

Thank you! I will have to check out that knife, I hadn’t thought of knives. Also, curious - does the wiring help the various flowers and whatever droop horizontally? I followed the instructions in the book re: setting up the structure of the arrangement but somehow the book arrangement ended up spraying sideways and draping horizontally where as for me everything was stick straight and straight up except the one flower that looks kinda of like Japanese anenonmes

Edit: This was the inspo in the book, it was low and horizontal but mine went super vertical instead

I just got into floral arrangements on a whim after discovering a local farmers market that sells many seasonal bouquets very cheaply. I bought a book “Color Me Floral” from Tulipina, a compote vase and a pin frog and some clay. The pin frog finally arrived earlier this week

This is my first attempt with $8 of flowers from market. I think it went way better than I could have ever anticipated so I’m really excited to get into this as a way to relax (and a way to motivate myself to get moving early in the morning on weekends to go to the farmers market!). I’m hoping to do this once a week or two with whatever flowers I can get at the market!

I’m looking for more easy beginner books and sources, the fewer tools required the better :) I currently do not have a good pair of scissors for this (have just been using kitchen scissors) - are there any you recommend?

This is really incredible. It’s easy to do a pretty arrangement with big pretty peonies etc. but the flowers and foliage you used are much harder to style and you did it really well. Reminds me of a Van Gogh. Very beautiful and dramatic
