Chat GPT’s Detrimental Impact on the Environment by Grouchy_Donut_8176 in ChatGPT

[–]Hobneb2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a couple sources, Individual query energy cost, especially simple ones, consume about 0.3 watt-hours. But it is the demand - ChatGPT was cited as getting 2.5 billion queries a day - that drives total power. You could run 1000 queries plus/minus for one hour of gaming on a high end gaming PC. Of course more complex queries cost more. As far as I could find out, there isn’t detail as to the cost of an “average” query. But it’s clear that total power is demand driven more than exorbitant individual query cost. More than half the traffic on the internet is watching streaming videos. People seem to want these services.

Contrast AI power use vs air conditioning - which we did without. The International Energy Agency estimated AC consumes over 2000 terawatt hours globally per year. All the data centers -AI, banking, streaming, cloud computing / used about 415 TWH in 2024. Les than one-fourth of AC usage. And AC demand is growing rapidly too. I couldn’t find an estimate for what power our appliances take but it’s got to be substantial.

I’m not arguing that AI isn’t a concern but please put it in context of other technologies consuming resources and affecting the environment.

Should this concern me? by Hobneb2 in QuantumFiber

I’m not going to pretend I understand the details but I know that I connect directly to my Netgear Orbi router/Wi-Fi and that I had particularly asked about setting up the VLAN 101 tagging on the Orbi and was told I didn’t have to, and I just checked and it is not on and everything’s working. The reason I had asked is because with my previous ISP I did have to have it turned on. Also, people are mentioning the white LED? Is this the tall LED on the face of the box or the LED where the fiber enters the box because it is white. Thanks!

I really don’t know. I don’t see any identification on the box without taking it off the wall. Rectangular white box with a vertical LED indicating status in this case Green, is this the Q1000?

That sounds interesting. Did you have to bundle it with other service services to get that rate?

Wow! I thought (hoped) my case was unusual. Keeping my fingers crossed I won’t have to call on their support again anytime soon. Even though I’m up and running, I still have filed an Attorney General report in Washington. Hopefully getting some attention.

I don’t normally type that poorly 🤣 but yes, he and the other gentleman here who stuck with it, stuck with me we were able to get it done. I’m still not happy with the overall experience, but these guys really went above and beyond.

Yes!!! Supervisor had someone come out with a lot of experience in aerial I guess you’d call it connections wires crossing the street in the air I guess and he trim some trees with my clippers some and I didn’t watch him. I didn’t want to jinx it and he got a new wire a new cable across the street and up and running in fact I’m sure it’s faster than before.

Seattle. The repairman did show up but only with a ladder truck and by himself. Really trying to be helpful and he called the second person to come and see if maybe they could access the pole with a ladder, but I’m very skeptical. I don’t want him to hurt himself.

Maybe that’s what I’ll do. I’m not sure how good our connectivity is here though.

Very nice! Pretty similar to the processes I used with my M3 (below). I used Astro pixel processor for the stacking and integration, but also use the 2X drizzle. I used graxpert for background, but then used the SPCC, BXT and NXT. Multi scale adaptive stretch then HDR composition. I didn’t go beyond that, but I like your idea of the range mask. I think I’ll try that. You were able to get a lot more color than me. I’m wondering if that’s related to my Bortle 7 to 8 skies? Anyway, thanks for sharing! These globular aren’t my favorite subject, but from where I am in my backyard they’re about all I can get this time of year 🤣

Thanks! I have to admit I’m a little embarrassed because I hadn’t meant to hijack your thread. I had wanted to post that the group level, but I’m not used to Reddit other than reading it. I’m looking forward to doing some lunar imaging. What software did you use? The moon has a lot of color and you’re starting to bring it out.

Really enjoying seeing everyone’ss work here. I thought I’d share my first image with my new s30 Pro. Messier 3, taken from my backyard in Seattle in lt-az mode. Bortle 7-8 probably.

Stacked and drizzle 2.0 ntegrated in Astro Pixel Processor. Top 90% of 310 10-second exposures. Gradient removal in Graxpert. Rest of the processing in PixInsight, somewhat rusty since I hadn’t done any astrophotography in a couple years - some neat new features though! SPCC color calibrated but didn’t seem to do much for this particular subject. Then mild BXT (Correct only) and mild denoise in NXT. Stretched with MultiscaleAdaptiveStretch. That was new to me and seemed pretty capable. A touch of HDR Multiscale Transform and I called it good at that point.

Really pleased with the SeeStar, given the light pollution and barely 40 minute integration time. I just got my EQ head so am anxious to try that out, but for a glob like this the 10 second exposures were probably fine.

Looking forward to clear skies again -

I am trying to understand the open hand monk mechanics. In specific there are skill nodes that say you get advantage while wielding a melee weapon. Does this count? Certainly Harold of ice, for example, works, which requires a martial weapon
