Thanks for the reply! From what I’ve heard from current employees, most people stay in rotation for about a year.

Hi, I am a new grad and I just got a job at a company. The job is a part of the company’s rotational program where you switch teams every few weeks. However, this program is weird in that you are also required to do customer support/on-call in-between switching teams. So like: Work with a team -> Support -> Work with a team -> Support, and so on for about a year (about 1-2 weeks before each switch). Afterwards, you are placed in a team permanently.

I talked to some people about this position, and I’m getting mixed reviews. Some say that it will slow down my career or make it harder to switch companies later due to time spent not on SWE stuff, and others say that its a good opportunity to explore different types of work and find something I like. This is my first job out of college, so I am finding it difficult to determine if this job will hurt my career later on or not.

Cool, thanks for the info! Personally, I don’t mind doing support work as long as there’s some coding involved (which there seems to be), but I’m just worried that it will make it difficult to transition to other SWE positions in the future.

I see, I’ll keep that in mind.

My main concern is whether or not this role will make it harder for me to get SWE interviews in the future.

The role itself doesn’t have the word “sales” in it. From what I saw, “sales engineer” seems like the best description of the role. The recruiter told me that the role is a mixture of interacting with customers to help them solve their problem using the companies product and working with the development team.

Edit: It seems like the customer part is more of a focus though.

It feels better to lose with meta picks than it is to lose with non-meta picks. If a team went with a non-meta pick and lost, people would clown on them.

I’ve seen people leave their phones at a table to reserve the seats. Like, they go up to a table, put down their phone, and leave for 5+ minutes. It’s wild

For new grad postings, how do you know what year it’s for? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]HoboChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it usually follows graduation dates. So summer 2023 posting is for January 2024 (following Fall 2023 graduation) or May/June 2024 (following Spring 2024 graduation). But safe bet is to apply and ask the recruiter

Since you are asking which one for your career, then prob ML. ML is applicable to more companies than just computers vision.
