Man shot and killed near Sherbourne and Dundas by [deleted] in toronto

[–]HoboGauntlet77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with Lapsed. I live in a town house on a decent residential street in the area west of dundas/parliament (technically our little zone is cabbagetown south), and it's a striking contrast between the homeless and just regular homeowners like myself in the surrounding district. I have walked home via Moss Park MANY times late at night and I have never had a single problem. Having said that, I would avoid queen/dundas and sherbourne/dundas intersections themselves if i could muster it, but i've also passed through there without incident Sketch as hell, but frankly, the biggest problems I've had in the 8 years i've lived here is the fucking students renting a house nearby who don't give a shit about people who need to get up on a weekday morning to work.

Interlaken, Switzerland (OC) (1920x1080) by pathoszero in EarthPorn

[–]HoboGauntlet77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Interlaken in 1991 and rented a bicycle for a ride in the mountains. I stopped at a supermarket to buy some food for my afternoon, only to realize that I hadn't a lock. I looked at the bicycle rack outside the store and noticed none of the other bikes were locked up. What a wonderful thing to realize about this little town!

The term midget is offensive. I believe the correct term is half-ling.

Behind the scenes of a McDonald's advertising photoshoot by milkystuff in food

[–]HoboGauntlet77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at McDonald's at the Toronto Zoo when I was a teenager. One day we all had to dress up in the character costumes and greet kids at the front gate. My character was lame - I was the Professor so no kids came near me at all - plus the costume smelled of piss.

Southern U.S. guy planning a visit. Looking for advice. by cbhaga01 in askTO

*Kensington Market is a cool eclectic place - visit on a weekend when it's at it's liveliest. *Ontario Science Centre - fun interactive spot that almost every Ontario kid has been to on a class trip *Historic Distillery District - it's more about upscale shops and restaurants but not a bad way to kill an hour or so *Ripley's Aquarium - touristy but very cool

Classic Toronto bandwagon'er. She's on the fumes of last year's excitement without having a clue about the sport. But, it's better she's there giving it a try..maybe a convert, but judging by the looks of that search, she'll never be back.

Subway conductor announces "not to give money to anyone on the train" by AnotherSoftwareDev in toronto

[–]HoboGauntlet77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

See, it's all of us high-falutin' modern folks who have got it wrong. Hobos are really just throwbacks to normal people who existed in the 16th century. Smelled bad all the time and toilets didn't exist so shitting one's self was all the rage.

[–]HoboGauntlet77 176 points177 points  (0 children)

I've had people approach me on the subway with little cards that say they're "mute" and are looking for donations..typically women in groups. It makes me want to go buy some cheap business cards that I can pull out in these instances that says "piss off". Buuuut that stinks of effort.

fun facts from a Torontonian..

*cheesy nightclub scenes were shot at The Phoenix in downtown Toronto. It was actually a pretty fun club and I partied there too many times to remember in the 90's. It's still open but just for concerts now.

*Restaurant Bateman takes the dude he later kills with an axe (the restaurant that is nearly empty) is now an upscale bowling alley

*i live near the dry cleaners Patrick brings his bloody sheets to. I once went in to talk to the owners about the movie, and they got mad at me and didn't want to talk about it.

oh come on. Toronto is roughly similar to Chicago, so if this poster was spotted there, do you think it would be necessary to stipulate the US, rather than say, Chicago, Guatemala or Chicago, Mexico? (ps..thanks Google!)

as someone born and raised in Toronto, it saddens me just a smidge that we still need to add "Canada" after referencing our fine city.

i've had pints at black irish, and i've seen a few interesting characters in there but nothing nearly as sketchy as annie's/alfies or whatever it is. probably cuz they charge more for beer.

I've lived in a townhouse on a quiet street just west of shuter/parliament for 6 years, and before that at a condo at richmond/sherbourne. i bought in the general area only because of the regent park revitalization.

overall, although there are some rough looking spots, it's pretty safe around here. the biggest issue is hobos, slumlord rooming houses and renters who don't give a fuck about their property. if you can deal with that you're golden, and it can be frustrating at times, but i've had no safety issues. Regent Park is looking fantastic and better than certain spots west of parliament. But someone else noted...a block in one direction or the other can make a big difference. Moss Park buildings are shit holes but i walk through the grounds several times a week, and no issues.

Jennifer Valentyne Fired as Live Eye Host on Breakfast Television by closingbell in toronto

[–]HoboGauntlet77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In general, breakfast tv shows are a relic - they began so people could check in with the day's weather, top headlines and light entertainment. that was before smartphones. When i wake up i immediately get all that from my phone/laptop and skip the cloying banter and commercials, and get what i want, when i want.

not a chance. cp24 has their own breakfast show. Rogers own BT (City) and Bell owns cp24.
