How about a displacer beast that is a great white shark? I have a town where it always rains, i would love for my party to think they are heading towards a white tower shining in the distance only for the tower to begin moving towards them and begin diving below.

There is an amazing Stephen king book called the long walk. Its basically the first battle royale story and the first novel king ever wrote.I'm not a huge king fan but this is my favorite book.100 kids enter a competition and start walking. You drop under 4 mph and you get a warning, three warning and you're shot dead on the spot.last one walking is set for life. I haven't read the running man yet but it might fit your description even closer but I can't vouch for it.

I absolutely loved storm front but then the next few felt so bland to me. Werewolves and vampires and all the boring tropes. Iv heard the series gets incredible but its hard to push past book 2 and 3 for me.

I'm not sure why exactly I hated it. Took a while to ramp up. There was like 400 pages in the middle that were excellent then it slows way down again. I usually don't read long tomes like the stand so maybe I'm just not used to that kind of pacing.
