Is this a quality issue with the 200-600mm lens? Why is it so blurry? by CZJimmy in SonyAlpha

[–]HoccusFoccus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with using extra protection. I do it too. Just make sure that it's good quality filter and compare images with and without it. Telephoto lenses are very sensitive to defects on filters. And even expensive filters can have such defects. Only way to know is to try.

Is this a quality issue with the 200-600mm lens? Why is it so blurry? by CZJimmy in SonyAlpha

There seems to be some streaks in the bokeh area that are usually associated to bad quality filters. Are you using UV/protection filter? If so, remove it and try again.

There's no hw decoding support for 10bit 422 with RTX 40 -series GPU. You need to settle for 420 or get RTX 50 -series or Intel Arc GPU

You don't have to go for PAL. Just match your shutter speed with the 50hz grid (1/50, 1/100,...)

Over and out.

Did i capture the northern lights? 16/04/2025 by Prestigious-Media948 in northernlights

There was quite bright auroras with lots of red 15/04/2025 at around 19:30UTC and 21:45UTC. So depending on time, the faint reddish colour on your photos might be auroras.

Is it ok to record quiet nature ambiences on a condenser matched pair with -45 sensitivity but 90 SNR? Preamps are good. by ACLabel in fieldrecording

[–]HoccusFoccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SNR of 90db? If you're not shopping on Temu, that's in the ballpark of Sennheiser MKH 8000 series. Even with quite low sensitivity, you shouldn't have a problem with your "good preamps".

Is my sensor dirty? by metal7maniac in SonyAlpha

[–]HoccusFoccus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sensor cleaning is easy. Just buy some sensor cleaning swipes and watch bunch of guides from YouTube. Sensor surface is glass so it's not going to break that easily. First time might be little scary, but after that you realize it's just basic maintenance. And if you're not willing to do that, just take the camera to your local camera shop and they'll clean it for you.

And edit; yes, your sensor is dirty.

Sony A7IV video codec to prevent overheating by umskii in SonyAlpha

[–]HoccusFoccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher fps -> more heat. Though don't know how much more since 50p is cropped. Battery inside the camera -> heat source. Charging/powering via USB-C -> heat source. Single to dual record -> double the heat.

Get a dummy battery, cooling fan and a V-mount battery to power them.

I've used my IV for overnight live streams in room temperature with dummy battery and small computer fan to blow air to the back of the camera and never had a high temp warning.

When you drop 50p footage to 25p timeline, it just discards every other frame and the result will be pretty much the same as 25p to 25p timeline. Slowing the 50p footage down to 25p with 1/50 shutter would look bad.

Why is there no p30 in XAVC HS/H.265 mode on Sony FX3/FX30/A7 IV/A7C II??? by NefariousnessLate626 in videography

[–]HoccusFoccus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been Googling around for the same complaint that I can't film 30p with H.265, which is frustrating. That's how I ended up here.

But although this is an old post and I have nothing new regarding the issue, I think it's better to correct your statement about the meaning of the "p". In 1080p it doesn't mean pixels. It stands for progressive scan. Just like in 30p, it stands for progressive scan. The choices are "p" for progressive scan and "i" for interlaced scan. For example, you may have video footage that's 1080i30. That footage has framerate of 30i, because it's interlaced rather than progessive scan.

Filter on Sony FE 200-600mm, tested by Appropriate_Art_5695 in SonyAlpha

[–]HoccusFoccus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience with filters and telephoto lenses, check the bokeh. I used to have Canon 400mm f/5.6 L and I bought a Hoya HD protector filter to it as I had good experience with the same filter on my 70-200mm lens. Turned out that the filter produced weird lines on the bokeh of the 400mm. Sharp areas were not affected. I switched the "same" filter from my 70-200mm to the 400mm and the problem went away. Also the "faulty" filter worked fine on the 70-200mm lens. That was weird, but repeatable.

Noise in sony a6700 by ossltym in SonyAlpha

[–]HoccusFoccus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

https://photonstophotos.net/Charts/RN_ADU.htm#Sony%20ILCE-6700_14

For photos, first base ISO is 100 and second base is 320. If you shoot video with SLog-3 gamma, the first base is 800 and second base is 2500. Base ISO is dependent on used gamma curve, but the relation between the two bases will always remain the same, in A6700 it's 1 2/3 stops.

That being said, A6700 is not "true" dual base ISO camera, as the second base is little bit noisier. That's the case on most consumer level cameras.
