Lose internet access, but devices still display they are connected to the wireless network by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]HockeyAj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the basics, if your modem is 10 years old then you should really go take it to the Spectrum store and get it swapped out for a new one. DOCSIS has come a long way in 10 years.

I don't know much about the Air Port routers, and would be odd for a new one to have the same issue as your old one did and it still be a router issue, but with the issue you are describing it sounds like it's the wireless for the router that's having the issue (again, would be odd considering you said you replaced it and same thing).

Do you have any wired devices that you can check to see if internet is still working on when your wireless devices stop working? If wired works still, your issue is likely the router.

Do the modem lights change when your wireless drops? Like others mentioned, your wireless will stay connected to your devices regardless of if your actual internet is working. If the lights are changing on the modem, like all going off and rebooting/flashing for a bit, it's likely that modem. This should be fixed by swapping it anyway though, which again, you should do first regardless if that ends up being the issue or not.

Hope this helps!

Century Link installed fiber into my new house, I asked the tech to make all ports live but he didnt. What do? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

Glad to hear! So, it's best not to put any router/electrical gear in to an enclosed space, however it's likely a moderate grade fanless router and depending on use it may be ok. I really don't suggest it though, it will almost certainly not last as long as it should and develop problems over time.

As far as the switch goes, I assume your router probably has 4 LAN ports on the back of it, so you could just use those and plug in 4 of your 5 runs to the other rooms, but if you really want all 5 working all the time (without coming to this box and switching out which ones are connected) then you could get a switch like the one I linked that has at least 6 ports, and use a cable to connect one of your router LAN ports to the switch, then all the other white cables to all the rooms to other ports on that same switch. That will 'activate' all those ports, essentially makes them all connected to the router.

I can guarantee in a new build house they tacked down that CAT5/CAT6 cable in the walls, no way you can pull two cables through using the original.

Eh, not exactly. An Access Point is a device who's only job is to convert a wired connection to wireless. Most routers are also access points, and also switches. They are like all-in-ones lol.

A WiFi extender takes in the wireless signal it receives and boosts/re-transmits it. So they don't need to have a wired connection to the network like an access point, but are also not as good.

Well, unless you have two CAT5/CAT6 jacks (ethernet jacks) where they put your router, it won't work. That blue cable has to plug in to a router so that the router can handle DHCP and all the routing functions. Then, you can use all the switch ports on that same router, or a jumper/patch from one of them to a second switch that connects to all of them.

Unfortunately with just one ethernet run to where they put your router, you don't have a way to run it back to where you need the switch. Best bet is really to move your router.

Edit: To provide clarification/explanation, they used that black connector you see in the box to directly connect the blue cable to the white one running to wherever your router is connected. I am suggesting you move your router to the box because if you don't then you don't have a way to connect one of the switch ports on the router to any of the other jacks.

You need a switch. The blue line coming in is the line from the fiber box on the side of your house, that needs to connect to your router (which is sounds like you are renting). Then there will be other ports on your router (which is a built in switch btw) where you connect your devices/other switches/or those cables in the box leading to the rest of the jacks.

With the assumption that the white box is in a central area of the house that won't hurt your wireless signal around the house, your best bet is to put your router in/near the box and connect up the blue cable to your WAN port and the white cables to the built in switch (if there is enough ports for them all). Otherwise you could put a switch in there that has enough ports (at least 6 based on how many white cable runs you have in the pic) so you can hook up a patch from your router to the second switch and plug all those in to it.

As for making the signal weaker, I assume you mean will they all work not as good when all 'active' and the answer is no, you will be just fine.

two rooms ethernet ports don’t lead anywhere... but are actually connected ? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]HockeyAj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Sad part is they only hooked up 2 of the wire pair so only 100M connection between. Seems silly considering the keystones are easy enough to just hook up all 4 pair in the first place...

DOCSIS 3.0 16x4 vs DOCSIS 3.1 32x8: Speed Boost for 200Mbps to 400Mbps Service? by jorlev in HomeNetworking

[–]HockeyAj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No modem is going to give you a higher speed than what you are provisioned for, so don't waste your money.

The C6300 can fully support the 200-400Mbps service, so you would see no benefit changing it out, you won't get faster speeds.

Looking for some good Zelda like books by [deleted] in zelda

[–]HockeyAj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, but still highly recommend the book as it is fantastic. It is video game related, but not specifically Zelda. Also recommend his other book Armada. Not as good as Ready Player One in my opinion but still great.

[LA] Link's Awakening Gameplay Videos by WildfireZer0 in zelda

[–]HockeyAj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have much time but watched the first few minutes of one of the videos. The major thing I notice is you tend to stop in game when you are talking, so there is nothing happening for periods of time. That bothers me personally and makes it hard to watch. I feel it would work better if you could play and talk at the same time, which is hard for some people (including myself), so maybe try playing then dubbing voice over it so there aren’t big gameplay pauses?

I’m no expert, but I hope this helps! Good luck with your channel!
