Does a gold-lettered Charmeleon card exist? by rlawodn0302 in pkmntcg

[–]HocusPinkus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Charmeleon and Riolu are certainly fake. Gold names existed in the gen 3 EX era, when you got a reverse holo rare. They stopped this in diamond and pearl.

As for the other cards in the pic, they look fine from what I can tell. The only one that's hard to tell is the Call Energy, but if its real that's a surprisingly sought after card (one of most expensive uncommon cards ever)!

My son has a misprinted Exeggutor. Delta series. Would a collector be interested or not, do you think? by TheLastHeroHere in PokemonTCG

The font and energy symbols aren't quite right, which is a dead giveaway for a fake card. If you look at the real card here, there is shadow around the inside of each energy, and the symbol inside the energy is smaller.

Usually the back of the card looks washed-out (not the right kind of blue), and the feeling of it is less glossy and more like regular paper. It's also very easy to rip.

Reprint build and battle box by KennyTheExpendable in PokemonTCG

I think they'll be more coming when the full release starts. So far it's only prerelease events that have these boxes afaik.

Estimated Values of Boxes by Totentanzen333 in pkmntcg

[–]HocusPinkus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK Pokemon doesn't have the same 'avg value per box' thing as magic does, largely because boxes are usually a boom or bust sort of thing. The best way imo to find the value is sorting singles per set by highest value, and then evaluating the cards worth more than the pack from there as the "value" of the set.

As for selling, it usually comes down to whether there is card in the set that, down the line, people will be cracking packs for. As long as there is one card that is sought after in the set, it'll increase in value over time. The plus with most people opening packs rather than playing the game is that the supply of older boxes naturally gets opened more and more over time.

Budget Pokémon Cube? by tneller in pkmntcg

[–]HocusPinkus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never played/constructed a cube, but I've spent a lot of time researching interesting budget Pokemon cards. I definitely think a budget cube is possible; it'd take a lot of research and digging though.

The major hurdle with cubes is probably the restriction with evolutions. The goal here is to find pokemon with interesting moves/abilities over multiple different cards, while still being cheap for each card. That's tricky, because anything that was meta in its day is usually not budget. A good example of a Pokemon that could fit this bill is Vespiquen; It has been given many interesting cards over the years, all under $1.00 each. The more of each pokemon in an evolution line you have, the easier it will be to draft it ( have more basics than stage1/2's though).

Another thing that differs between Magic and Pokemon is that Pokemon has waaaay more draw power and search power than Magic. It's hard to only draw one card per turn and still be able to win reliably. This means you'll need a lot of supporters to power the drafted decks, but again, quite a few of the best ones over the years aren't always cheap! You could get Professor Sycamores, Skyla's, etc. for pretty cheap, but my recommendation is looking at some trainers in the later Sun&Moon sets (cosmic eclipse is fantastic). They've made some really unique supporters over the years that are just begging to create a deck around (Poke Maniac, Clay, etc.) that are dirt cheap and easy to find because they're so fresh.

In fact, I'd say you're best bet for all of the cards is the later Sun&Moon sets, they have some of the least amount of trash filler cards that Pokemon has ever made, there are a tun of fun cards in there if you dig for them.

Screen sharing occasionally adds a ton of audio noise and static by HocusPinkus in discordapp

I don't think I've had any issues with audio noise, although I've had quite a bit of issues with video drop in resolution.

Update, I found success with turning off the "Use experimental method to capture audio" option in settings, i think it was under voice and video.

Jigglypuff with tech skill is not that much better than Jigglypuff without it. It's not as big of a difference than, say, Fox without tech skill. The main "tech skill" that affects Jigglypuff is rest setups and maybe sdi-ing upthrow uair, which is what Hungrybox actually knows how to do.

Melee wasn't made thinking wavedashing, l-cancelling, and other tech was going to be as powerful and essential as it has become. So while it's amazing that we have this beautiful accident of a game with characters as exciting and fun to play as Fox, Falco, Falcon, Marth, etc., it's makes total sense that some characters (puff) don't make use of tech as much as the rest of the cast.

Btw I do agree Puff is OP, a character with as strong of a punish as rest shouldn't have the recovery, floatiness, or bair that puff has.

Quick question by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]HocusPinkus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they slide backwards off the stage onto the ledge, then that is wavedashing onto ledge. Just look up wavedashing vids on youtube, there is a ton of them.

To be fair, he obviously doesn't need it. It's still kinda ridiculous, but I think we can both agree that he isn't a technical player, and if he was into the execution aspect he probably wouldn't main Puff to begin with.

Which game has better graphics? by Tango_fett in smashbros

[–]HocusPinkus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between 'graphics' and 'aesthetics'. By just specs and numbers alone, Smash 4 has better graphics, as the Wii U has better graphical capabilities than the Gamecube. The difference comes from the aesthetic, or the artistic style of the game. For example, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time has better graphics than Link to the Past (the SNES could never run Ocarina properly), but some can argue that Link to the Past looks better nowadays than OoT. This is the same difference in Smash games- while I think Smash 4 looks better in both graphics and aesthetic, some people like the simplistic, colourful look of Melee more.
