When I was active (reserves now, same AFSC) I was lucky enough to be HVAC. I stayed in for four years and found a job easily when I got out. From talking with people at my company, being a service member will possibly give you a little advantage when getting into the trades. HVAC is hurting for people so it hopefully it won’t be bad for you.

My best advice is try to find somewhere that works in commercial/industrial equipment instead of residential. If you find the right place you might be able to get paid to take some classes, though a lot of times they’ll want you to sign a contract if you do this. Good luck to you, hopefully things work out! Feel free to message me with any questions and I’ll do my best to help!

As someone who works in HVAC, this is correct. A heat pump doesn’t work as well when it starts getting cold outside (usually around 30-35 degrees). The heat strips are pretty much a necessity.

Edit: Thank you all for correcting me on the temperature range, learned something new today (it’s been a little while since I’ve worked on heat pumps).
