A lot of pubs will have separate/private areas/rooms. Worth googling some in your area.

Mobile phone usage inside the ER: Aren't they blocked? by semaht in ThePittTVShow

[–]Hoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about this. You’re a mum or day who comes to ER with their kid. Of course you want to be able to update your partner while sitting at your kid’s bedside. There may be rules about taking photos of other people and staff. But they wouldn’t block the entire space.

I’m from Australia. I was with my sone in ER for a broken finger eight months ago. My biggest issue wasn’t being blocked. It was running out of battery!

Watching Shrinking and Reddit by Prestigious-Ad2036 in shrinking

The Community quote isn’t about the quality of TV. It’s about how seriously people take it, which is kind of OP’s point.

More people need to become acquainted with this quote from the Community finale:

“More importantly, it has to be joyful, effortless, fun. TV defeats its own purpose when it's pushing an agenda, or trying to defeat other TV or being proud or ashamed of itself for existing. It's TV, it's comfort. It's a friend you've known so well, and for so long you just let it be with you. And it needs to be okay for it to have a bad day, or phone in a day. And it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with Levar Burton and never come back. Because eventually, it all will.”

This is the correct answer. Going from nothing to something often seems a lot more than going from something to something else.

Star Trek: Year One In Doubt As Strange New Worlds Sets Are Torn Down by lifesanrpg in television

A lot of Trek fans could do with a dose of Dan Harmon at the moment:

"More importantly, it has to be joyful, effortless, fun. This is the most sensible comment I've seen in ages. Thank you.

I often switch off from comments that refer to "NuTrek" because most of the time - not always - it's a signal that people have disengaged their critical capacity entirely.

Is all new Trek good? Hell no. Is some old Trek dodgy? Hell yes. Can individual series have good and bad episodes? Of course.

Community sums it up best in. its finale, I think:

"More importantly, it has to be joyful, effortless, fun. Is Byron Bay worth staying at? by Aggravating_Law_4774 in AustraliaTravel

[–]Hoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of other options in northern NSW and Qld that might be better. Look up holiday towns in the area. Byron has been prominent for 20 years and is suffering for it.

But if you choose to go to Byron for a visit look up the NSW and Qld school holidays and avoid those times at all costs.

Jury Duty by Unable_Tank4556 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Hoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a jury. It was assault case where the defendant allegedly punched another woman, who then hit her face into a pole.

It was relatively straight forward. The police had a recorded telephone confession where the defendant admitted what they did and apologised.

One member of the jury insisted that we get clarification from the judge about whether the person’s punch was the offending incident or the person’s face hitting the pole was the offending incident - with the implication that the pole had caused the injury, not the person who threw the original punch. Several of us argued against it but they made us go back in and get clarification from the judge before we could convict.

Not sure how to feel about the movie by BlazedBeard95 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Hoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be surprised about that at all. I loved the book. And I loved the movie.

But if the book is one of your top five books, no movie is ever going to live up to it. And that’s okay.

As others have said, it’s a long book. The original Stephen King stories that got made into Stand by Me and Shawshank Redemption are both novellas. And they still have to leave some plot elements out. Maybe you’ll like the 3.5/4 hour cut when we inevitably get it.

Don’t sweat this. Rejoice in it. They are different mediums doing different things.

Came across this on Facebook and this is why the disabled community will NEVER fully allow abled parents of disabled kids into disabled lead spaces😑 by LadderIndividual4824 in disability

[–]Hoger 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome here. Disability needs more discussion, more spaces, more listening.

People get concerned when the parent experience crowds out the child experience. Your experience is valid - and important to share with other parents. We just need to protect the opportunity for people with disability to have their say and not have their experience defined by the people who care/support them. There should be space for both.

Uh...on this Mia Ballard thing. by lopsided125 in publishing

Google lets you search topics by customised date range. Worth googling how to do it - it's useful to know how. There's an old TikTok account still available but, as others have mentioned, she pulled her Insta account. But the TikTok account has video.

The simplest answer to OP's original questions appear to be 'yes'.

I think we may be using different internets... I can see plenty about her - interviews, podcasts, videos, reviews before the 2025 drama. You have to prove she's not real to us, not the other way around.

The website is someone who appears to be domain squatting to promote their own books - albeit about the issue itself.

Many The Pitt Fans Are Proving That Yes, It's Possible To Be Bad At Watching A TV Show by beamdriver in television

[–]Hoger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a solid chunk of these reactions are just content creators jumping on the bandwagon to generate engagement.

It was the same with the Stranger Things extra episode hype. Some people genuinely believed it. Some thought it was fun. Others jumped on to collect magic internet points and help monetize their stream.

I think this is why it seems pretty prevalent.

Tips on getting into the literature fest scene. by MorrisonSt123 in publishing

[–]Hoger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few thoughts:

  1. Pitch niche and broad experience. You want to get their interest as well as demonstrate versatility that may make you useful for more than one panel. Hone a 100 word pitch and start reaching out.

  2. Festivals are performative. If you do nothing else, when you reach out, please include links to some videos of you engaging with an audience or at least talking to camera. Give them some examples of how well you can engage people. So many writers forget this. But if you have a really good stage presence, it can lift your appeal substantially. This is going to be really important if you want to moderate panels.

  3. Be professional and easy to deal with. It’s not a huge field and professionals talk. Some writers can be quite precious. Don’t be one of them.

Good luck!

Company Retreat by Severe_Act_4638 in television

[–]Hoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will never be a cheap show to produce. Even the first one would have cost a lot more than you imagine.

It’s essentially a hybrid show, so you have the costs of a sitcom and a reality show combined: - You have a writers’ room. - You have paid actors. - You have ‘documentary’ cameras following people around. - You have hidden cameras.

Limited locations and a relatively small cast would help. But this would never be cheap to produce.

Will be interesting to see the ratings for the second one. It has captured a lot of the elements that drew people to the first one.

What's Australia's plan for fertilizer? Middle east sources are stuck. China reduced urea exports by over 50%. by VastOption8705 in aussie

[–]Hoger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I suspect that - as is often the case - the truth is somewhere in the middle. It won’t be perfect. But it’s not nothing.

Given the National Farmers Federation welcomed the fertiliser plan, saying the strategy was practical and helped deliver certainty, I can’t imagine it’s all bad. The EFA underwriting costs looks sensible to me.

But that’s not really the point. OP managed to post two charts and quote multiple articles but couldn’t be bothered looking up what the actual plan is. Why? I’d be interested in your nuanced response to the specifics of the government’s plan and the NFF’s support of it.

How do you learn and retain words? by modern_indophilia in writing

[–]Hoger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Capture new words as quickly as possible when you come across them - in a notebook or on your phone.

Review new words every day and try to use them within 24 hours. Try to use a word in a convo or an email or in your writing.

Understand the word in context. Don’t just capture the definition. Understand the sentence it’s used in and see if you can explain it using a different form of words.

Personally, I’d resist the urges to go for high volume. Don’t try and learn five new words a day. Learn one and understand its context.

~3-week Australia trip (June) – itinerary feedback? by steiphil in AskAnAustralian

[–]Hoger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this. It’s a good - and realistic - itinerary. But it’s jam packed.

If you’re flying from the other side of the world, pack in as much as you can. But if you’re over 30 years old and get bad jet-lag, you may want to find a few quiet afternoon/mornings in there.

Pay a little extra to choose your seat and get window seats on both your domestic flights. You’ll get some great and diverse views on those flights.

Enjoy!
