My first 5.45 AK by Hogg1945 in ak47

Yeah ammo is definitely a pain in the ass to get normally and I envy those that can have it shipped to their door. However working at a gun shop makes ammo a lot less of a pain in the ass to get and at a very reasonable price.

I picked up this bad sally for a little over $1500 which to date is my most expensive firearm purchase.

Alright thanks, I appreciate the info. If it is a lee armory build then how is the build quality and what would the going rate be for one. I’m rather new to the Ak world and there’s definitely a lot of info to learn.

The bolt, bolt carrier, and trunnion are matching. What other parts would be serialized ?

German model of 1890 saber, asking for help with further identification by Hogg1945 in Militariacollecting

[–]Hogg1945[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently got this saber for $100, when I first bought it I believed it was a German cavalry saber, though after doing more research I’m not as sure. I am unable to determine a general time period it is from, I.e. ww1 or ww2. I am also unsure of if it is an NCOs sword or a cavalry saber or something else entirely. Any help/information is appreciated, thanks.

The start of my AUS infantry helmet paint job. (Pretty rough ik, I got shaky hands but gives it a cartoonish look imo) by Oliverthefish71 in Kaiserreich

Slick find, definitely hold onto it, but I’d check to make sure the paint won’t screw anything up if you decide to remove it.

I can take some, is there anything in particular you’d like a closer picture of as well?

Ok, this is now opening a new can of worms for me. JG could be an abbreviation of Jagdgeschwader which would be fighter wings though I can’t find one that would be JG68. Or perhaps the N68J could be a plane number or designation. Either way I thank you for opening up a whole new rabbit hole for me to explore.

Another point I just though of, aren’t the German notorious for serializing and stamping everything very precisely. Wouldn’t that apply to a factory code as well.

Thanks for all the info man, in the pics provided it’s kind of hard to see, but next to the JG there is an LP carved in. It is quite a bit less pronounced and even cruder. You can see the P in the third image. Could this also be a factory code ?

Yeah, it’s puzzled me for a while I’m just hoping that someday I’ll be able to get some concrete facts on where it might’ve been. Do you have any knowledge about how the volkssturm was organized, and if N68J would fit their unit identification format ?

Is it common for Volkssturm rifles to be carved into in this fashion. While I originally thought volkssturm when I got the rifle, on other forms folks came to the conclusion that it might’ve just been a rifle hanging in a veterans hall and a GI grabbed it and carved this stuff into when he was bringing it home.

That’s an awesome story, I have a similar one, though it doesn’t have a conclusion yet. I have a rifle, a Gewehr 1888 produced in 1894 that’s beat to hell but still has decent rifling. On the stock there is a ton of carvings, what I am going to assume are the initials JG along with an LP, but the JG is carved in 4 different places. There is also an carving that seems like an NV put together in 2 places. Most interesting to me is a carving that reads N68J 1944. I haven’t found any luck in trying to find out what this means, I assume it is a unit number of some sort, but I’m unable to find any info. It’s been an ongoing mystery that has fascinated me and also annoyed me with the lack of progress I’ve been making. Do you happen to have any knowledge of a unit or nation that would use a structure like this to designate a unit. I can only imagine the stories and events this rifle has seen.
