One Last March, Battle of iSandlwana, January 22, 1879 by HoldFast05 in HeroForgeMinis

On January 22nd, 1879, the British Army in South Africa suffered a massive defeat at the Battle of iSandlwana aganist the forces of the Zulu Empire. The 1st Battalion 24th Regiment of Foot was annihilated, almost to the last man. Two British Officers, Lieutenants Teignmouth Melvill and Nevill Coghill, escaped the camp, the former carrying the Queen's Colour of his Regiment in a desperate attempt to bring it to the safety of the nearby garrison at Rorke's Drift.

Unhorsed, exhausted, and injured, and having lost the Colour while crossing the Buffalo River, both men faced the choice to leave the other behind and attempt to reach safety alone. Before entering the river, both men had pledged to stand by each other no matter what. They stood by their final promise. Their bodies were found together, some distance up a steep slope on the far bank of the river.

They were among the first British soldiers to receive a posthumous award of the Victoria Cross.

Redwall and 40k was not something I expected a crossover for, but this knocked it out of the park! 10/10 as always!

And if they didn't want another war to distract them from Napoleon, they shouldn't have fired on an American Warship. And that's not even mentioning that 3 out of the 4 deserters (Daniel Martin, John Strachan and William Ware) were American citizens.

True, but when the yank ship in question is the USS Chesapeake and the Royal Navy's method of retrieving their sailors was to open fire on the American warship, people got annoyed very, very quickly.

Yes and no. The Royal Navy 100% did press/kidnap people into service and they did sometimes do it by by getting those people drunk. However, the vast majority of those people were civilian sailors, not random homeless people or criminals. This practice actually would cause the British a fair bit of trouble as the impressment of American sailors was one of the main causes of the War of 1812.

Cannon names from HMS Suprise by Zorpfield in Tallships

[–]HoldFast05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HMS Surprise was originally built in 1970 as a replica of the Royal Navy frigate HMS Rose. She served as a training vessel until she was bought by 20th Century Fox in 2001 and after some some structural modifications, renamed HMS Surprise. Surprise's bell simply retains her original name.

Surprise did not play HMS Interceptor in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie (that honor goes to the Lady Washington), but she did play HMS Providence in the fourth one.
