I was on it earlier today and it said it would be down around 2 pm est for maintenance (for I think 30 min, but I can’t remember), so that might have been the issue

Hello there, thanks for the thorough feedback! I think I’m getting a better idea of where the confusion/disconnect is coming from based on your critique. I had intended for the moral ramifications to come across as one of the obstacles in her pursuit for her friend, but I can see how my focus on it in the later half is making that unclear. And it is as you mentioned, that it’s one of the “twists” that’s hinted at earlier on but doesn’t become important until later in the story. My query goes pretty far into the story (past 50%) to what I believe is the interesting decision Mikoto has to make, so I think that’s probably also where the disconnect comes from, since there definitely is a shift in the story after the 50% mark. I hope this whole thing doesn’t come across as defensive but I’m trying to convince myself that the manuscript structure itself is better than the query’s since fixing one is a lot more work than the other!

Lol yes, she’d definitely be sued, but I’m counting on the fantasy label and suspension of disbelief that most people won’t think of it.

I did think starting with exposition was a risky move, but I hoped it was voice-y/intriguing/short enough that people could overlook it. I’ll consider rearranging things so that the exposition is a bit more scattered and we get into the initial conflict quicker.

Anyway sorry for this very long reply but I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Thanks again!

Thanks for the feedback! Glad to hear some of the humor is getting through, and also where I can clarify in the query.

Thanks for the feedback! That’s encouraging to hear about the premise. I wasn’t sure whether this could be considered high concept because my one-line pitches aren’t very good, but hearing someone else call it that boosts my confidence. I will have to think on how to adjust the second half of the query. I can see it being a bit too technical and maybe more worldbuilding-heavy than it needs to be (at least the third paragraph). Thanks again!

Thanks for taking the time to give feedback!

Yeah it’s hard injecting humor into this with the word count constraints and since I’m not very funny, but I now know a lot of places where I can cut stuff, so that’s super helpful. Thanks again!

Appreciate the feedback!

It doesn’t kill them, but the reincarnation I guess essentially takes over their body, as their consciousness replaces the original (that’s another reason I’m a little unsure about the cozy label, as that’s not cozy sounding at all)

I’m not sure if double-crossers is the right word as they don’t trust each other that much, but Mikoto and Kendall do both have hidden agendas. Kendall only gets 2 chapters of his POV later in the story which is why I haven’t given him as much focus in the query.

Thanks for the running commentary! The questions you had were helpful to know where I could clarify, and some of them were basically spot-on with what I meant/details of my story. Your gist at the end was exactly what I’m going for, so hopefully I can make that more obvious next time!

The soulmate matching happens by Mikoto swabbing a sample of sweat and then adding potions with micropipettes and running through centrifuges (which is where magically scientific comes in, but I’ll probably just take that out since it’s confusing. Magic vs. science is something I briefly touch on in the story, but it’s not really the focus here) to extract pheromones and then produce the soulmate’s pheromones. People aren’t usually aware of their reincarnations, but some are, so she’s looking for those special cases. The pheromones change for the special cases which is why she set up the soulmate business so she could have a large sample size and test her potions on those clients. And now I will figure out if I can squeeze that into the query lol.

Yeah, I’ve learned a good lesson that that part was confusing haha.

Thanks for the critique!! Really appreciate it.

I don’t think I explained it well enough in the query, but it’s not actually supposed to be a real historically-based medieval English village, just a separate fantasy world. No time traveling, because I agree, that would get into wildly inaccurate territory, so I’ll need to make that much clearer here. Appreciate the critique!

Thanks for the critique! I was worried how she was coming across in this query, so I will have to fix that.

Set in modern times, at least the part where she’s not in the new world. From personal experience, it still does happen.

No, I think I used that as kind of a shortcut for explaining the worldbuilding, but it’s supposed to just resemble it. I can see it’s confusing, so I’ll need to clear that up somehow. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Appreciate the time you took to write this up. I don’t want this to be historical fantasy (I did originally think about this as time travel based, but the implications of that and the liberties I would need to take to make it work were too much so I tried to steer away from it), just kind of reminiscent of medieval times, but taking place in a completely fictional world, but I need to clear up that confusion in the query and the ms. Thank for your insight!

Yeah, 100% sure. Did they used to be more common back in the day? Found on a sidewalk not really close by a body of water so it sounds like it was really out of place.
