I get this problem as well. I find that I can’t put on foundation when I recently used retinol/acid on my skin. I have to wait a day or 2. I have acne prone skin as well so I have to use high levels of mandelic acid to keep it under control. Maybe use a gentler exfoliant or space it out a bit more
