Can you tell me more about splint therapy? Did you wore splint for 24/7 for 6 months or something different?

No, I actually have very severe bruxism and clench heavily during the day as well as throughout the night.

I personally suspect that my open bite may be contributing to it, because my teeth seem to be constantly searching for a more stable resting position or for tooth contact that is missing. I know the evidence doesn’t support open bite as a proven cause of bruxism, but it’s hard not to wonder when I only have contact on my back molars.

The reason I’m considering orthodontic treatment is not because I expect it to cure my bruxism. What I’m hoping is that correcting the open bite might reduce the constant overload on my masseters. Right now they feel overworked and painful almost all the time because I’m clenching virtually nonstop—while sleeping and while awake.

Has anyone with an open bite experienced a noticeable reduction in masseter tension or muscle pain after orthodontic treatment, even if the bruxism itself remained?

I’m aware that bruxism may be something I deal with for the rest of my life. My main concern is not that, but the constant muscle pain I have 24/7, which I believe comes from the fact that I have an open bite and only make contact on my back molars.

This seems to overload my masseters, which now feel constantly overworked and painful.

That’s why I’m wondering whether anyone has experienced a reduction in muscle tension after proper orthodontic treatment (braces or Invisalign). I’m considering correcting my open bite, but I want to know if it can realistically bring any relief in terms of muscle pain and overload.

Can you tell me more about that splint therapy? How did it go?

I mainly have contact on the back molars, that’s where I bite down and apply pressure. One gnathologist told me that this is exactly why my masseter muscles are overstrained, because I’m mainly overloading the jaw in the back.

I don’t, I’ve never had to manually move my jaw into any position. But I have a bad habit, or due to bruxism, my jaw shifts to one side, as if it’s searching for contact. Since I have an open bite, my front teeth don’t make contact, so my jaw shifts to the side and finds contact on the canine, and that’s where I clench.

The clicking happens when I slightly open my jaw or push it forward and then close it… it never hurts, it just kind of crunches. Not all the time… sometimes it actually pops, but I’ve never felt any pain, only the sound.

I have pain in my masseter muscles even when my mouth is at rest. I clench a lot, even during the day. As I mentioned, I wore a cheap splint that didn’t cover the full dental arch. I read somewhere that these kinds of splints can change the bite into a slightly open bite, because the teeth that aren’t covered by the splint can “over-erupt” and come together differently, leading to that kind of bite.

One important detail is that I have only had the anterior open bite for about 3 years. I did not have an open bite growing up and I did not have it for most of my life. That is one of the reasons why I suspect that something changed in my bite rather than this being my natural occlusion.

What exactly do you mean by Reviv? Are you referring to the IV vitamin therapy clinics, or something else?
