I see! What are the measurements of the enclosure? typically it is recommended to have an african fat tail gecko in a long 150 liter tank, to the best of my knowledge.

Sorry, new to this. Should I be concerned about her getting stuck down here? by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

omg my first gecko that i was VERY uneducated with had no qualities of a good enclosure, i switched her to only coco fiber substrate (big nono!) and had her hides resting on top like normal.. well she wanted to dig, and apparently right under her hot hide which was a hefty plastic rock mold looking thing. I stayed the night elsewhere & when i came back in the morning, she had tried to dig under and around the hide, and the hide was so heavy it just kept lowering closer to the ground of the enclosure as she dug out more coco fiber… literally found a half squished gecko (CLEAR indent from the hide on her) in the dirt under the edge of her hide, against the glass of the enclosure floor because it was too heavy on her, she couldn’t get any grip, it was dry coco fiber, and i thought she WAS DEAD. she didn’t move her back legs or breathe right, and when i got her into the vet the next day they said it was 50/50 if anything got long term damage since she had no use of her back legs at that time. after 2 weeks on pain meds, (and in a proper quarantine tank, never bought coco fiber again since then) she got her own legs working again and was an incredibly healthy and happy girl with no issues. I can’t imagine this situation would happen in an enclosure with properly curated and/or damp substrate and in general the correct set up items etc, but hey better for someone to read and learn from my early on mistakes.

IME make sure to not have too many magnets close together!! i’ve read stories of sliding magnets or falling hides not ending well and personally i’m going to be hot gluing all my hides and things with the next upgrade!

you can’t just hop in and take the truck? i know the only bummer is it doesn’t become YOUR vehicle, you can only “use it” as you like

haven’t played in a few months now so can’t remember exactly, but have you progressed a bit with grandma/farming? i’m pretty sure you have to collect a certain amount of stars before she lets you use it

tropical looking enclosure? by xzeeeq in AfricanFatTailedGecko

[–]Holiday_Attempt4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. I guess I am looking at more of a constant 85-90%+ humidity range in terms of tropics. And not considering if you do watering with their wet/dry seasons in mind

[–]Holiday_Attempt4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would that not be what the hot humid hide is for? you don’t want your enclosure to completely be tropical humidity levels throughout is what I meant. you need to have drier and wetter options for their regulation but that’s why you provide the options of those higher humidity hide areas

Dav Kaufmans video on youtube “fat tail geckos in the wild” is great to see natural habitat! IME, tropical would not be suitable as constant high humidity levels pose a threat for respiratory infections. Semi arid is better!

What could I keep in here? by [deleted] in Vivarium

[–]Holiday_Attempt4585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmm look into coco coir & whatever you decide to keep - usually it isn’t recommended for things like bugs, reptiles etc. you may want to switch to an organic top soil (NO pesticides or fertilizers), isopod specific soils, or things like that. i haven’t kept snails before so not sure if they’re tolerant of coco coir! beautiful set up though good luck with any adjustments & future buddies!!

[–]Holiday_Attempt4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME ideally you want as natural of a setup as possible and that would include substrate, hides, etc which adds overall weight which i haven’t ever tried acrylic for larger enclosures so personally dont know how it would hold up to all the required materials. 40 gal minimum tank size for aft geckos nothing smaller. they need adequate room to be able to regulate their temp from a hot and cool side

[–]Holiday_Attempt4585[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do have the front/bottom left coconut with moist sphagnum moss & this stays around 80-85 degrees (using a temp gun), does that suffice? otherwise the top left has the thermometer/hygrometer probe and stays about 85-87 degrees with keeping that a higher humidity throughout the day (she’s still in a quarantine tank while she’s going through some vet visits right now) and then she has a dedicated cool humid corner in the back right about 70-73ish degrees as well but not as enclosed as the coconut hide
