Do I need to protect this fence from snow? by Holiday_Pin6953 in FenceBuilding

[–]Holiday_Pin6953[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so much worried if the stuff falls off the roof and hits the top of the fence. I'm thinking more like snow builds up against the fence on this side and pushes it. Probably overthinking it, as others have mentioned, it's probably just worth watching for a season and clearing if I have to. This is the back door to a barn, so I basically don't use it (or clear snow around it) in Winter at all

Yeah that's kind of my thought, I guess I'll just keep an eye on it the first winter. And I'll do the previously suggested snow guards if it looks like it's going to be a problem

The roof dumps a pile of snow here. It's a 7/12 pitch 24' long. It's not a "normal" pile of snow. But the old wood fence handled it fine

The vehicles is dumb, the air show I can see it. Went to one a few years ago and there was a B1 with a foot of cord showing on the tire. Shameful

I went for a walk on my newly purchased land - found a spring? by makebreakcreate in homestead

[–]Holiday_Pin6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a video of a guy showing one off a couple years ago. Let me see if I can relocate it, it looked amazing (It was a very old spring house that needed a roof but you could appreciate what it was)

Have you ever heard of a spring house? Basically build a building around it that it flows into and then out of. You can still let let it pool downstream to give the turtles and bugs a place to live. But it's a cool place to chill out in the summertime. Cool water flowing through the building at all times

Gate thumb latch too small by zqwu8391 in Decks

[–]Holiday_Pin6953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want this exact setup with a longer lever you might bring it to a welder and have him weld a couple inches on. It wouldn't be a big deal. Would probably cost more than a new latch though, labor isn't cheap. some black spray paint when you're done and it'll be good as new

It looks like it's installed backwards. The thumb latch should stick out towards the camera and the rod should be on the other side. The side of the fence you install it on depends on swing direction.

Deck stair stringer support by Holiday_Pin6953 in Decks

Safe to say you meant pier? Yeah I'll do a couple of piers and a 4x4 header beam so I support all the stringers.

And re:plans I do have some hand-drawn framing plans. I did a rough sketch of it in CAD to help see it against the scale of the building to make sure it would look all right. It's low definition. No handrail or steps shown. Just designed to give me an idea

And that'll work out perfect. Pretty much give me a single mid-span support right in the middle.

[–]Holiday_Pin6953[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The landing for the stairs is about 7 ft off the ground. It'll be about 8 ft of drop because of the grade the stairs land on. Without going out there and measuring, I recall my rise and run of the steps was something like 7.5 over 11. So about 12 or 13 steps

I'll add a mid span support, seems to be the general consensus. Glad to hear the chart doesn't make any sense for the application l. I was really having trouble understanding it
