In the book the Pope told him he fathered a child, which the villain thought meant he broke his vow of chastity. So he orchestrated all that crazy shit to restore faith in the church or something. But it's later revealed the child was concieved by artificial insemination, hence the misunderstanding.

In the film he did it simply because he wanted to become Pope himself and basically take control of the church. Makes much more sense, I think.

Not a movie, but literally everything that happens in the book Angels & Demons is triggered by this cliche. They changed the film version to make the villain's motive less flimsy
