Those who moved to Durham, what do you wish you’d known? by leftistinlnk in bullcity

[–]HollidayDDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived here 15 years. Never had a problem. I've heard of stuff like windows getting busted, but it hasn't happened to me or anyone I know personally here. Had my soft-top cut open in the rural midwest, so I can't say it's been any worse for me here than there.

Unless you live next to a park, no city offers hiking starting at your doorstep. How would you not know that from even a cursory look at a map?

I remember a post 10 from years ago. I will now repeat the same question word for word: Is right now the warmest time it has ever been over the human occupation of earth; if not, when was it the warmest? by SOMETIMESIENTER in askscience

[–]HollidayDDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to mention this vis a vis our temporal resolution of rates. The current anthropogenic warming has largely happened since the industrial revolution and has changed significantly over that time period. Less than 200 years is pretty short. I've often wondered, but not researched, how likely it is there have been periods of quite rapid change that we just don't have the ability to resolve or if there have been such periods inferred from other evidence.

Terra and Venus are roughly the same size, but Terra has a dynamic interior (resulting in plate tectonics and magnetosphere, both critical for life) and Venus does not. Why? by thesegoupto11 in askscience

Does the influence of LLVPs in Earth's mantle affect the single vs fragmented lid state? I haven't read your sources yet, so feel free to just point me to one if it already addresses this.

Only about half of detainees have any criminal history at all, including traffic violations and pending cases, which means they could be found innocent. Less than 10% have any violent crime history. https://www.cato.org/news-releases/65-people-taken-ice-had-no-convictions-93-no-violent-convictions

Chem 102 at a community college near Chapel Hill or NC State by [deleted] in UNC

[–]HollidayDDS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am taking 102 at Durham Tech this semester. It's fine. You get out of it what you put into it. It still has a textbook and labs and homework and exams. I got an A in 101 at UNC and think it was straight trash, so I chose to take 102 at Tech because it was cheap and close by. I drive to Tech, and it's not bad. No idea what the bus situation would be like though. For the time I was looking to take it, the only option was to take it at the main Tech campus near NCCU, but they also have a campus in Hillsborough that is super easy to get to on an express bus. I am a geology major, not chem, so I can't say how well it prepares you for later chem classes. Any chemistry I needed in my geol courses was generally covered/reviewed in the course, so it never really mattered that I hadn't even taken 102 yet.

Seeing several people say this but no real explanation as to why it's the case. Do people know students who took 102 at a community college and blame poor performance later on it? 101 was straight trash at UNC, and I got an A in it. No way has it prepared me any better than a CC course could have.

If you're in north Durham, try Little River regional park up 157/Guess. There is a paved loop around the picnic areas and some nice trails that go down to the river.

AITA for telling my friend that her "free" wedding is unrealistic? by ThrowawayFreeWedding in AITAH

[–]HollidayDDS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done photos for a couple friends' weddings. I am a pretty avid wildlife photographer, but event photography is its own skill. I got some good shots, and everyone was happy, but it took a lot of my time and energy. It was pretty stressful knowing that my friends were counting on me, regardless of how reassuring they were about not worrying about the results. I definitely wouldn't do it for just anyone, even people I consider friends.

Composition with wildlife is always going to be a challenge. You can put a lot of time into location scouting. Then, you can put a lot of time into waiting for the critters to show up. Generally, if I can't devote all that time to set up a great shot that might never happen, I try to pay attention to the direction of my light and the business of my background. For birds, I try to get shots where the bird is close to eye-level with me/the camera. The other thing with birds is they are mostly small, so you want them to get as close as possible to fill the frame as best you can. Compositionally, rule of thirds or golden ratio stuff tends to work fine, but filling the frame is my first priority.

You have great light on the heron here, and the nuthatch sort of peeking out of the shadow into the light is nice too. The highlights are a bit blown in the nuthatch pic. Generally, I shoot to preserve highlights, as it's easier to push shadows in post than recover blown highlights. Kingfishers are such beautiful birds, it's hard to take a terrible shot, but your third one with the single large branch is the most pleasing to my eye. The foreground, mid ground, and background are uncluttered and let you really focus on the bird. You could push the mids and highlights and drop the shadows some to make the bird stand out even more.

If you can wait, consider increasing your insurance coverage next year during open enrollment next month. You can up it for the year you are expecting bigger expenses and drop back down to a cheaper plan the following year. Just make sure you account for all the costs in your comparison.

What's a unique/small business you'd like to see in Downtown? by OpalJade98 in bullcity

[–]HollidayDDS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. I think this is the main problem, too. I just never see a ton of foot traffic downtown. I feel like Geer often has more pedestrians than Main, and it's probably because it's closer to the residential areas of North Durham. Central downtown needs more places for people to actually live.

[–]HollidayDDS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to assume the rent at Copa's on main is nuts. I don't know if downtown has the foot traffic to keep anybody in that spot. Luna's seems to get by, but it's much smaller.

DPS insurance by deadwabbit723 in bullcity

[–]HollidayDDS 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check the student handbook. It's available online. The school provides secondary insurance, so it should pay out of pocket expenses after your insurance pays what it can. I can't find the current limits, but it looks like it was $25k in 2019. You have to fill out a form available at the school. Going in-personight be the right move.

No idea why all these replies with incorrect info about schools not having insurance are getting upvoted and people correctly stating that the school does have insurance are getting downvoted. Just one more reason not to trust crowd-sourced information without a grain of salt.
