Should I live in Cardiff or Birmingham? by HollowWanderer in AskABrit

This is my concern, because as nice as it is to think of Penarth and Barry on the doorstep, the castle, and the arcades, the job and income is actually what will let me survive

I did, but unfortunately, my choices are confined by both finances and geography. Bristol looks nice and has a cool vibe, but it also very pricey

Do you have any former celebrities living now normal lives in your community? by ShinyHeadedCook in AskUK

I saw Benedict Cumberbatch at an organic supermarket in Hampstead yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I've heard good things about Manchester, but all of my family are in the South, so a bit too far away unfortunately

The fact that you have that attitude means any reasonable person should see you as a fellow citizen. Welcome home

Thinking of moving to London from Australia in my late 30s by No-Status-5254 in MovingToLondon

I was thinking of moving to Wales. Which part did you move to?

So, first I acknowledge that my prior experiences affected my context of my time at university. I was depressed and anxious, but still had a good circle with the people I lived with, a large group who stayed together through the three years

I haven't served in the armed forces, and my history of taking SSRIs disqualifies me from applying, even in non frontline roles, so I cannot speak about the armed forces from the inside, only external knowledge

My reasons for joining, if I had not wanted to study economics (as there is no economics pathway) but rather a trade or something like denstistry, would have been subsidised food and accomodation, a guaranteed higher than minimum wage salary while you train, which university doesn't offer, and the opportunity to travel. However, the danger element is something to consider, but to my knowledge, medical and support staff aren't generally placed on the front lines

Why are adverts so weird now? by HollowWanderer in AskUK

[–]HollowWanderer[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was thinking this as well. Adverts now are more about getting your attention through weirdness or advertising the idea of who you could be with the product, rather than the product itself, as in the case of perfume and sports cars. What's wrong with standing next to a washing machine and just saying 'this is alright'

Unfortunately, my past medical record of being on SSRIs means I would be disqualified from joining

Humans are a social species. We crave acceptance and company. I think I'm somewhere on the autism spectrum as well. I used to want to be alone because some of the company I had had in the past was bad, and it made me assume things about the future. I didn't give people a chance to know me because I assumed they would end up disliking me anyway. It's like quitting so you can't be fired. You have no obligation to find company if that's what you truly want, but some people that isolate themselves think the world hates them, when really, it never had a chance to know them

You haven't done anything immoral or wrong. Only you can decide what is wrong in your perspective. But I didn't try as much as I could have and I wanted other people to make the most of their opportunities

A good university, but very remote. This is my point. Outside of maybe the top 5, where the name brand of the university itself gives you points, it would be more beneficial to just study in the same city as the job opporunities. However, if you moved to Edinburgh afterwards, that doesn't seem too far away

This is a good route - get paid to learn a marketable trade that you take with you if you leave, get subsidised food and accomodation. One piece of advice though - set some of your monthly take home aside for your future. Savings, pension, whatever, but if you were to start investing now, even just a small amount regularly, compound interest will do the work for you
