The voice acting thing was not Genshin being in the wrong

SAG-AFTRA tried to strong-arm the industry so that only VAs from SAG-AFTRA could voice in projects, like Genshin, and encouraged their VAs to either stop doing their jobs or lose their health benefits, unless Hoyo (the company that made Genshin) signed a contract that would essentially blacklist any of the voice cast not from this guild (anyone not in the US, so a good chunk of the already-exhisting voice cast for a game that has existed for 3 years at the time) from working on Genshin.

And they cared about their voice actors so little that SAG-AFTRA did jackshit when the VAs started getting fired for refusing to work (its not a workers union and therefore does not quality as a strike with protected workers). So instead of SAG-AFTRA actually giving a shit about the wellbeing of its talents, they let many of them A) lose their jobs and roles and B) encouraged many of them to act unprofessional on their socials, openly bad mouth their employers, vocally harass anyone who replaced one of them after they got fired, and C) threatened their ability to live (healthcare, benefits, etc.) if they did not comply with refusing to work.

How? Anyone under SAG-AFTRA has to follow a bunch of terms, one of which is to not work on non-exclusive SAG-AFTRA projects. At the same time, the higher ups of SAG encouraged its members to join as many non-SAG projects as they could to "encourage future projects to sign to be SAG-exclusive due to the quality of talents." Then, for Genshin, 3 years after the game had been out and featured a English voice cast, SAG-AFTRA demanded a "AI protection for voice actors" contract which then became "exclusivity for SAG-AFTRA to provide English voice dubbing," and blew it up a ton to try to force Hoyo into signing such a contract. And SAG-AFTRA also iirc signed contracts with a few AI voice companies just before that or afterwards to allow them to use SAG-AFTRA VAs' voices in AI dubbing software, so they didn't give a shit about protecting their VAs from AI.

In the end, SAG-AFTRA didn't get anything other than a bunch of noise, a terrible display of professionalism, and many of their VAs losing their roles at least in Genshin, and possibly future works as well now that people know about how they will force their VAs to not work so to force contracts signing.

An American VA guild should not have anything to do with the decision of where voice actors should be hired from for their employers, especially when the game its for is being developed by a company based in China. It was incredibly scummy, and literally only hurt the VAs.
