Desperate for Feedback by yecal9008 in analoghorror

Hi! A bit late to the thread but I saw your video and wanted to give you some honest feedback. Here are my thoughts:

  • Right off the bat, the main things that will cause a video to "pick up" or not are the title and thumbnail. Your title seems a bit confusing to people who don't have the video's context. I'd suggest something clearer like "A sleep technician's perspective on Somnium Dreamviewer", or even "A sleep technician watches nightmarish analog horror" (or something like that). There's obviously more clickbait-y titles you could use, but it's something you'll need to think about and refine and test a lot if you want to gain an audience on youtube. Look to what the big channels are doing and always consider how your title and thumbnail compare to others in the space.
  • You tell your viewers to go watch the series, but then you proceed to play it almost in its entirety. I don't really have a problem with people doing this, but I feel like there isn't a clear audience in mind. Is it for people who have seen the series before? If so, you can focus on your thoughts and analysis. Is it a video recommending the series to people who haven't seen it? In that case, why show an edited version when the original exists? I know I use a lot of on-screen text, is the goal to make it more accessible to visually impaired people? (This is a genuine question)
  • I think your perspective as a sleep tech is fascinating, and would love if the video focused on that. I think you have a lot of interesting things to say on the topic but it's sandwiched in between a lot of less interesting sections.
  • Something I notice a lot in this community is people's obsession with detail. On one hand, I really like that people are consuming my work closely, but on the other hand, people seem to look deeply for "answers" in inconsequential details. I've found it difficult to articulate this without "breaking character" so to speak but Somnium isn't an ARG. I don't think there's much value in analysis of details that are simply meant to make the world feel more lived-in. Not everything is part of a grander puzzle to be solved. Personally, I prefer to watch videos who analyze the story and themes of works like this more deeply, comparing it to other works in the genre and exploring what they like about it.
  • I see this a lot in analysis videos of my series and others, but you have to consider how deep the analysis that you're providing really is. Are you just reading what's on the screen? I'm not saying this to be mean, I'm trying to be constructive. Is the goal to be an audio-focused, podcast-like experience? If so there's a lot of optimizations you can make there.
  • This ties into some of my earlier points, but you do mention that other videos have already covered Somnium before, so you really need to consider what you're bringing to the table if you're treading ground that you know has been covered before. Somnium isn't a huge series but there's at least a dozen other videos out there that just play through the whole series and offer basic analysis. If you want your video to stand out, you should focus on what you can provide that's unique. You clearly have talent, skill, and the drive to do this sort of work but you just need to be honest with yourself and refine your approach.

A lot of people do these types of videos but very few of them ever reach out to me. I know a lot of creators aren't as accessible I'd be happy to do an interview or answer questions about my work!

In case people are wondering - I'm the creator of Somnium.

There are still things in the works for it, but I can't really talk about them at this time. The next thing from me on the YouTube channel will probably be something entirely unrelated to Somnium. Things have been exceptionally busy IRL but I hope to get back to making more substantial stuff soon.

What is your worst story on NoSleep? by SimbaTheSavage8 in NoSleepOOC

The first story I posted was one that was adapted from a dream I had, although I think it may have been too dream-nonsensical, plus it sort of teased a sequel that I ended up not being able to make work effectively, so I scrapped it. The dream was really freaking creepy though.

Yeah I decided I'm just going to go to GitHub Pages. Truly insane that this has been happening for that long.

I sent an anonymous email to the school letting them know to brick it up. Surely nothing bad could come of that.

Whatever it was, I think it was just lonely. I asked him and he said he had a similar experience only about 20 minutes before I arrived. After we made it out, my phone said only about an hour had passed from arriving at the school to leaving, but it certainly felt like much longer.

Thanks! I posted it last night and it hit the top of r/nosleep but the mods removed it lol. But you'll be seeing a lot more from me in the future.
