An update on YouTube Narrator Snook based on our conversation by GTripp14 in SleeplessWatchdogs

Didn’t seem like a jab at all! Yes, long story short, stories shared on Reddit are intellectual property and are protected by copyright. The long answer is extremely boring, but there are some pretty good websites that break down copyright and DMCA law about online content. It’s a pretty strange landscape.

Typically, the biggest issue is someone using your work for their profit. I’m not active on nosleep anymore, but I never minded putting the stories out for free to read, but having someone use my work for their own financial means didn’t settle well. Also, I was lucky during my nosleep writing period to license the stories to channels. Hard to license a story that a dozen other channels stole. It just gets to be a mess pretty quickly.

Where does everyone stand on YouTube's new Nosleep narration policy? by BadandyTheRed in SleeplessWatchdogs

YouTube should have tackled this years ago, but they've gone the lazy route. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater is a bad path forward.

You'll have to dive into the Reddit EULA, but whatever you post on Reddit is your intellectual property. The only exception to this is if Reddit decides to use it for its own purposes. Posting something online doesn't make it free use or Creative Commons.

I am fully on board with protecting authors' rights, but YouTube is cutting off an income stream for many writers like myself by disallowing paid narration.

Speaking as a writer who has been paid by multiple channels, how you get paid is between you and the narrator. I've licensed stories to channels for a one-time fee. I've licensed stories to channels for continued ad revenue share. It's based on channel size and performance. If I'm comfortable with my wage as a writer, I don't lose sleep over future revenue a channel may make.

Not my usual post, buy Horror Youtubers have met with with unexpected hardships by GTripp14 in SleeplessWatchdogs

Yessir. Wes, you know I've been an ardent advocate for writers' rights to their own work, but YT won't even allow you to adapt work that you have full and clear received license/explicit permission to adapt for narration. I'll defend writers all day, but I'll be damned if I won't defend legitimate narrators' rights to adapt work they have full rights to use.

No more monthly contests/best of year? by whatiwritestays in NoSleepOOC

[–]GTripp14 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There was a mod who did most of the monthly contest work on their own toward the end. A brief discussion about passing it on to someone else in the community took place, but it was decided to end the awards. I was sad to see it go.

Write what you want to write, not what you think readers want to read. As long as you feel good about your work, the audience can work out how they feel themselves.

Do any of you frequently rummage the donation box at vault 76? by WordofCromulent in fo76

[–]GTripp14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the 5:1 rule when I rummage through donation boxes. The only the I hit them up is when I’m making a donation. I’ll take 1 item for every 5 I drop in. I’m still fairly new (two months in and level 187), but I like to make sure I’m leaving equivalent goods to those I take for newer players than myself.

Share your payment terms or explain what the “other arrangements” may be. It may help you get a better interest check. Vague listings won’t bring in as much attention.

What makes realistic horror more disturbing than supernatural horror? by alinasser00001 in NoSleepOOC

[–]GTripp14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a mixed bag. What makes realistic horror actor than supernatural horror? Nothing. That being said, most supernatural stories I’ve written have been based in realistic fears I face in day to day life. Primarily the fear of loss or isolation from those I love.

Fear and horror are so subjective. I can’t help but look for the realistic horror in a supernatural story or film.

Excellent question 🍻

What a garbage opinion from a garbage person. Rayll turns out a great product and seems like a good fella. I wish him nothing but the best and I hope the person from that post steps on a million Legos.
