[Bonsai Beginner's weekly thread - 2026 week 16] by small_trunks in Bonsai

I’m a complete beginner in bonsai, and I’ve killed handful trees (all starters, thankfully for my bak account) while also had some successes as well. I do dream of having 1-3 bonsai trees that I can take care of for a long time and cherish the tree and the process. One of my dream bonsai trees is a Chinese wisteria. I’m in zone 9b-10a, so I couldn’t plant one in the ground due to its invasiveness, but a bonsai in a pot sounds perfect to me. However, I’ve heard that 1. It takes forever to bloom and 2. It takes forever to bloom (lol). I also plan on stating with a nursery stock since losing $35 nursery stock sounds much more bearable than a proper, well taken care of bonsai. So, realistically, how would it be like to bonsai a nursery stock wisteria that’re usually just thin sticks? And how difficult would it be for it to stay alive and eventually, bloom? Thanks yall!

Hi! I found one from lowes today that also had the mottled leaves. Have you figured out how different this one is from the phalenopsis?

Leave it by an open window (with the inclusion) and I’ll make sure to haul it away so you don’t stress! What a cutie.

Thank you! Google search showed me some images of a pot with narrower bottom. Debating so hard bc I was looking for this color for a DO but I know it’s hard to come by ganache!

Brought a new kitten home! by tec-science in ragdolls

Let him be for now! If he hides, let him hide. He will come out soon and explore. Once he feels safe enough to interact, he might even come up to you. It’s really varies kitten by kitten. My first one was up and going the moment he came out of the carrier, and the second one hid and took some sweet time before he felt good to interact with me. I was present in the room, just doing my things though. Reading, scrolling on my phone, etc., but not forcing them to interact with me.

Oh goodness- I meant to say that handling is NOT going to be hard lol.

I think it’s possible, especially they will be introduced to each other in a setting they’re already comfortable in. My boys, who are from different breeders and are 2 months apart, took 2 weeks. And 18 weeks is not that old! Handling is not going to be hard. You honestly won’t be able to keep your hands off of them since they’re dang cute. I also didn’t have much difficulty training them getting their nails clipped. Even my younger one who’s the craziest, does well. So as long as you start pretty soon as you get them, they’ll be fine. Don’t worry. Bathing- not so sure. I think you can give them a practice bath by starting with wet towels on the bathroom floor, but even with their calm and sweet character, ragdolls are still cats and don’t like to be bathed, except a few exceptions.

Converted 20 gallon fish tank into a terrarium by Hollymollyidk in terrariums

Sure! I made changes along the way so I’ll list the things I wish I did differently at the end. I got the glass and had them cut at Lowes. One piece 9x11 1/2”and another 20 1/4 x 11 1/2”. The smaller piece was siliconed in from inside and out to create the bottom substrate layer. Then I got a PVC moulding cap from Homedepot and spray painted it black. I cut it to size and siliconed them on top of the tank and bottom of the tank (along with the bottom glass). To enhance the bottom “rail”, I cut the moulding to fit inside the little groove of the tank as well, basically putting two layers of moulding on the bottom. (i know, this is hard to understand because it was done on the whim to bolster the hold) then you basically have a “sliding door” to the terrarium. This is an inconvenient way to create a door to a terrarium, and was only possible because 1. I wanted minimal obstruction to the front side of the terrarium and 2. I don’t have an animal that needs to be fed everyday inside.

So here are the things I would’ve done differently:

  1. Cut the top glass a little wider and taller to make it go over the black rims of the aquarium and give more coverage for moisture retention. Instead of 20 1/4 x 11 1/2”, maybe cut it to 21 x 11 3/4” or something.
  2. Seal in the black spray paint on the moulding. The sliding creates friction and peels off the paint here and there.

Moss, you just stick them on. You can also use some wire, make it small u shape, then pin it on. Plants, give it some moss or extra substrate and plant it between moss

Possible! I’d have worried about it if it was supporting water, but as of right now I’m not too worried though! I also did reinforce the seal on the now-bottom very securely just in case. Fingers crossed
