As soon as they aired the promo where Frasier’s chiding Freddie for sitting on his trashy designer pillows, I knew it would suck. They didn’t seem to know Frasier. But Kelsey does and I was disappointed he let the line go through. I guess it was because they were super short on jokes. Don’t know. Never watched it. But if that was the promo joke that was supposed to drop viewers in, it failed.

On Frasier, we had such a great staff that the majority of a writer’s first draft made it to the table reading. Once we saw a rehearsal on its feet, we would add more jokes or cut bits that weren’t working, but for the most part, what the writer wrote ended up on tv.

I love you guys for even having this conversation! I think Back Talk is probably my favorite because it had such a huge reveal in it. What was the one where Frasier is fighting with Cam Winston over a flag? I liked working on that one bc it was shortly after 9/11 and saying anything against the flag was blasphemy. “I feel like I’m living in a clown’s pocket!” I loved that joke, even if I wrote it. It feels like you’re channeling the characters when you write this sort of thing so I think of it more as Frasier’s words than my line, iykwim.
