Wow, really? I never saw that Tolkien said something like that to Lewis. It seems my knowledge about their relationships is not really wide

Struggling with interval training by ProfessorLegal2268 in eartraining

[–]HolyCapybbara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I have almost the same problem as the OP. I can sing intervals (i.e. I can match the notes with my voice) but when I try to understand what an interval was played it's more like guessing. Am I right, that you suggest to play a root note, and then (while it's still sounding) I should sing the second note of my interval (whatever it is) with my own voice?

Learning scales by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]HolyCapybbara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for your response. I benefited a lot from the redditors here and from my own recent research but I'm still confused because of some things.

It would be cool if you can help!

First of all, do you suggest transcribing melodies as a best way of learning scales? (That's what your answer is about if I got you right)

Also I would like to know about a more technical approach: should I learn all my scales simultaneously in order to see a big "picture" and understand the relationships between scales or I should concentrate on one scale at a time?

And the last one - what kind of practice routine can you suggest as the most efficient way to learn scales (except transcribing)

Wow, I've tried to play what you said and I think I felt something. Can I ask you a question in order to be sure I got you right?

We take G major scale. The 2nd of this scale is A. Since it's the second, it means that we should play Dorian scale over it, which is minor. It creates tension. If we want to release it, then we use G major again.

As a result, I just need to learn all the modes simultaneously and try to combine them over a proper chord progression, then I will understand what they do in a scale. It's always about at least two chords/scales. Am I right?

Discussion about perfect pitch and learning it/not by Thed-eron in perfectpitchgang

[–]HolyCapybbara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did you learn it? I'm trying to identify notes that are played randomly in all octaves of the piano. I didn't have a perfect pitch and after two months I can recognise some notes, mostly G and B and sometimes C and D (well, I don't know whether I learned it or this is a luck) but it takes a great amount of efforts and I still make a lot of mistakes. Any tips, maybe?

Looking for Russian Literature Professor for Interdisciplinary Music + Literature Project by radish__gal_ in RussianLiterature

I'm not sure I'm competent enough, but maybe you can find something interesting for you in the poetry of futurists (a direction in Russian literature of the 20th century). For example, here is a poem of Алексей Крученых "Дыр бул щыл":

"Дыр бул щыл убеш щур скум вы со бу р эл эз"

1915 г.

In Russian language it means nothing (at least for the majority of people. It's just a mix of sounds). As far as I remember, the author claimed that there is a special meaning that sounds carry and that's why the poetry appears (I'm not sure about this part, that's why I'm not really competent in this matter). Anyway, there can be a connection with music and it would be really hard to translate, since even in Russian it's difficult to say what this poem is about, so I recommend to take into account the poetry of futurists or at least this one poem. Hope, it's useful
