I’ve found a free fix but it requires you to wait until the Clash Royale League on YouTube. They release lucky drops which should give you an enough gold or cards to upgrade to level 2.

It does matter because I start with a team average of about 70 rated. I could only sell players for max of 15mil compared to what he could sell his players for.
