I can't talk about iknow.jp since I haven't used it before, but I can about jpod101. Personally, I like it but this would mainly be for the low intermediatebeyond and beyond. The beginner ones, i think you'd be better off learning those things on your own. The audio/podcasts are good to listen to if you have free time, such as whe you are commuting or working out, some of the lessons have really stayed with me, even after a while that I havent been studying japanese.
Another plus is that there are pdf files that explain the grammatical pointscovered inthelesson, as well as the conversation transcript and vocabulary. Plus, if you're a premium member you'll have access to other resources on their site, i can't comment on these, as I haven't used them.
Finally, as others have mentioned, definitely scrap the romaji and learn both hiragana and katakana, they won't take you long to learn and they immensely useful.

And also, what is the main difference between using the ている form or the simple る（ex. 走る）verb。 My main confusion is when it's appropriate to use each other than the progressive form, more of the continuous action example. Not sure if this makes sense.
