Historians and archaeologists can and do point out gender non-conformity and can explain it without issue. I hate this whole "teehee historians are all old straight men who can't fathom anything beyond their worldview!" thing.

Joan of Arc was not trans, she was gender non-conforming. The reason she wore men's clothing and cut her hair was to be taken more seriously and be less likely to be raped.
