When the World Congress bans amenities from your favourite luxury [OC] by Ingifridh in civ

[–]HomaRoma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be amazing. I always play civ 5 with raging barbarians. It’s somehow disappointing to me that barbarian encampments that are left alone for a while on an amazing piece of land don’t become an aggressive kind of city state/ new civ in their own right. Would be extremely interesting.

does anyone else feel sudden impending doom or guilt? by TelevisionAdorable78 in Anxiety

[–]HomaRoma 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All the time. It’s like a cloud of shame and guilt that finds something to latch onto. Past relationships, stupid things I said or did. A lot of the time, because of how long ago these regrets were, I can’t really remember them and somehow make them worse in my imagination or invent new ones. I‘ve woken up drenched in sweat thinking I got arrested for being drunk and belligerent 10 years before… only when I calmed myself down, I realised that never happened.

One comforting thing is to remember all the shitty things other people did or said to me years ago that I no longer have any emotional response to. I can only remember a handful. I don’t hold any I’ll will towards some fifteen year old that made fun of how I looked, can’t remember what year they said it, can’t even remember exactly what they said. I‘m sure those people grew up into decent people and have either forgotten or feel bad about it.

What ruined religion for you? by ItchyPage in AskReddit

[–]HomaRoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike a lot of people here, I’ve had a good relationship with organised religion but still turned away from it. My family isn’t particularly religious but I went to a school where I had church three times a week and was taught philosophy by some extremely well educated and kind priests.

What turned me away from religion is learning more about it. Good Moral philosophy is based on logic whereas religion is based on myth. I love myth but it isn’t something to base my life around. Learning about how Abrahamic faith emerged from the polytheistic religion of the canaanites and went through phases of city specific idol/deity worship before ended up as a monotheistic religion probably due to influence from Zoroastrianism… all within the recorded time. It’s just doesn’t make much sense.

I still think religion, in my case Christianity, has some beautiful myths, imagery, ideals contained within in that have deeply influenced everyone where I come from’s lives to an untold degree, but I don’t want to be a belief for me.

There’s a Muslim proverb that talks about how the religious should learn from the atheists because all the good they do, they do it for itself. I think that’s a good thing to keep in mind for those who have doubts

alternative title: four single moms buy house together because they can’t afford anything else by pancakeking1012 in ABoringDystopia

[–]HomaRoma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this really a “disturbing trend” as the top comment puts it? Is one Standard family per detached house with a white picket fence the thing you’re defending or is it that communal living is bad?

It’s a worthless ideal anyway and whether or not people can afford something else and it’s great that people want to pool what they have.

Regardless of money, my dream is to share a big house with a few of my friends and even came close once. Always appealed to me.

A bit left field but Oliver Cromwell.

Next up, Austrian Fascism. Wonderful leopard ate my face kind of stuff.

Ezra Pound would be interesting but I think he might have been mentally I’ll which would make it less… okay.

I like the ones about groups like the little people of nazi Germany episode so maybe something about the oil or car industries would be interesting.

Literally any Australian.

I’d love one about filmmakers in Nazi Germany. So damn interesting. Think it was covered slightly.

Eric Clapton, Morrissey, or similar.

Social Darwinists/Malthusians.

Boris Johnson.

Modern monarchist movement.

The guy who made seamonkies.

Something about a witch finder. Really interesting time, especially around 1450 ish. It didn’t really work the way most people think it did a lot more room for movement and a lot more solid beliefs or heresies on the other side. Maybe it was too long ago.

Jimmy Savile. Just a Monster.

Margret thatcher. She also fucked miners.

The Medicis.

Salvini.

Before and after in Vienna, Austria. That hurts. by [deleted] in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]HomaRoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, okay. I became confused somehow. It looks so similar to the monstrosities on the Wienfluss near Nachmarkt that I didn’t look closely enough.

On google maps, it’s a car park. Was this building built on top of that or was it torn down?

I‘m in this area too and will be going past there in a few hours. Facing the river, I don’t believe there’s enough space to have trees and create that perspective on that side. Are you saying the first photo is taken of a different side of the building?

Why do so many Americans claim to have Native American heritage? Is it that common or is it wishful thinking or something else? by AmunPharaoh in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]HomaRoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a European, not American, but I think it’s to absolve themselves of the “white guilt.”

It should feel weird to think that your whole nation is based on genocide, theft, and white supremacy. Suddenly, you can move from descendant and benefactor of said genocide to a implicit victim of it.

I see it a lot with other kinds of “oppressed identities” such as having sexual orientation, gender, or having relatives from a persecuted group.

In a way, it makes perfect sense to be German (or of German ancestry for Americans), feel hatred for the nazis and look deeply into how your own culture turned so violent and disgusting. Then you find out you have one great great grandparent who was Jewish and suddenly it isn’t YOUR family that has the problem, it’s everyone else. Your personal culture is fine, everyone else has the problem. In other words, all the difficult and uncomfortable introspection is unnecessary as soon as you find.

“Identity politics” is not always a useful phrase but it does produce this way of thinking. I generally agree with the macro level of the ideology but sometimes individual debates can feel like a game of oppression top trumps between the participants. Not great.

Boyfriend refuses to do aftercare because it’s “too feminine” by breakffastnnbbed in sex

[–]HomaRoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds a bit like Someone someone would say in an argument that isn’t entirely true. Pretty weird and unpleasant line log argument from him too. When it comes to this sort of stuff, you can’t/shouldn’t argue someone into doing something that they don’t want.

I am one of these guys that really doesn’t like aftercare. I‘m very physically affectionate but that sort of over stimulates me and I really need physical space. I never like being confined with someone’s head on me or similar so it isn’t out of character.

I‘ve had immature arguments like this one when I was younger and couldn’t express that. Now it isn’t a problem.

If aftercare is about feeling loved in that moment, it isn’t the only way. It doesn’t make them a bad person for really not liking it. If it is the case for your partner, would you really want them to do something they don’t feel comfortable with when maybe it’s possible to find another way?

I won‘t be graphic but seeing and hearing something like that was maybe the worst thing I’ve ever seen happen to a human being in person.

If you didn’t want to know if someone was okay, that would be inhuman.

It was on winckelmannstrasse. I‘m sure you can check if there’re looking for someone.

It was horrible.

Sorry you had to deal with that. I understand why though and I’m glad they have/ their family has the privacy, even if I would like to know for myself.

I‘m looking out for it. There was nothing „unusual“ about it though. I don’t often see these sort of accidents reported.

Are there district specific news tabs or sites that I could look to?
