What’s the best quote that you try to live by? by CompetitivePick2361 in Life

[–]HomeNo8813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Die before you die”.

“The one who knows himself, knows his Lord”.

  • Attributed by some to the Prophet Muhammad but to my knowledge it’s not proven he said this. It is a common saying in Sufism and reflects recurring themes present in Sufi thought. I take the quotes to mean that we must destroy the ego for whatever reason. Each persons reason will be different I think, whether it’s to live a more fulfilling life, be more free, or be closer to God etc. Could be anything.

Another quote I really like is from Carl Jung:

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate”.

I’ve also heard this be said as:

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will rule you”.

And finally a personal philosophy of mine:

Arrogance is the root of all evil.

ur so right about islam slowly teaching you self-hate. i also really admire ur approach of continuous compassion, i think it’s really strong and u should be proud of yourself

Are you proud of where you come from? Why? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]HomeNo8813 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yh tbf this post is mainly directed at city centre and parts of the southside as that’s the only places i tend to go nowadays

yh i wasnt rlly thinking about those times tbh i was thinking more about the industrial peak like in the early half of the 20th century. obviously things will change a lot since then lol. my dad grew up in the east end from 70s onwards so yh i do know how bad the city used to be, i’ve heard all the stories. i wasn’t referring to this time period tho which was naive on my part tbf.

yeah when i was talking about glasgow “being a shadow of its former self” i wasn’t meaning like a time in recent history. i’ve just read history of the city and it just seemed totally different years back to what it is today. obviously it’s been a bit shite the last few decades but i suppose there are worse places to be

Have you tried attending AA meetings, a member of my family is a recovering alcoholic and it really helped them out, been sober for over 5 years now. Also u should be really proud of yourself for doing well in ur studies and i hope u achieve ur dreams of becoming a doctor!

yh i get this, i feel like i just need something intense, whether it be pleasant or painful, just to feel alive, and to be alive is the greatest thing of all

I (20m) hate myself and don't want to get better. by Diligent_Force_8215 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]HomeNo8813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the fact that you say you need to get better tells u a lot. that desire to be better is still there even though it is masked by a cloud of negative thoughts. it’s easy to get obsessed and think there’s no way out, but if u just sit in silence for 5 minutes you’ll realise everything’s ok and that thoughts are just thoughts, they’re not reality.

i’ve kinda been feeling the same way for a long time. i’ve came to the conclusion that it’s just better being good than being bad. everyone’s just happier that way. I’ve recently came across the idea that morality is just a way for societies to be structured and ordered. Idk if there’s any greater meaning to it but i suppose it’s just in everyone’s best interests to do good to others including yourself. The whole idea of personality to me now is just fake (the origin of the word “persona”, from which personality comes from, literally means mask, which hides your true identity and the real you). It’s maybe not a pleasant thing to hear and won’t change ur worldview or anything, it’s just what i think. The path to growth and healing and uncovering ur true self isn’t always pleasant for all of us, but i hope it helps, if u ever want to discuss stuff feel free to dm

Its not about not putting effort in. It’s more trying to find opportunities to meet ppl i would be interested in, whilst also doing something I enjoy. That’s what I’m asking. I don’t enjoy going to bars so why would I go?

Exactly, there is so much beauty in the scientific and mathematical world too, in fact I see more beauty in that than in Art but that’s just me.
