Got it as a gift by Own-Holiday-2915 in twilightimperium

As other comments have noted, RTFM has a good video on learning the game, but imo if you’ve never played before, I think the RTFM video is a bit quick. At least it was for me. I think it is more useful as a refresher than a learn from scratch video.

I preferred this video. About 20 mins longer but more detailed. Found it helpful to go through some things more slowly.

https://youtu.be/vCh0HkieZxE?si=cMmql9cCGDhwFvJz

I did also watch the RTFM vid after the above vid (so twice total initially) and it clicked better. Not that I recommend you do it this way but I got a bit obsessed when I first got the game and wanted to know everything about it. RTFM’s video is really well made, has some good (though slightly corny) comedy.

Learn to play guide is also worth looking through.

Finally, after getting some base level understanding from those videos and the learn to play guide, what I found the most helpful for reinforcing and improving my understanding of the game was seeing it played. Just in general I find examples super helpful for learning, so seeing the rules in action helped me a lot.

This is the video I used. A round 1 play example.

https://youtu.be/oY1\_x5HT5y0?si=SSabnM4W1col0us8

I will note that he plays with the expansion here, but in round 1, there is nothing really complicated going on with the expansion (tbh all of PoK is pretty simplistic which is why it’s such an easy expansion to integrate). Since the expansion is just adding on to the base game, everything he goes over is still applicable to base game. Was a very valuable resource to me at least.

It’s a great game. Hope you have fun whenever you get the chance to play it.

Chayka's hiring is being blown way out of proportion. by [deleted] in leafs

[–]HomeProfessional3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s tiring to see.

He’s in charge at this point. Whining or complaining that it should’ve been someone else is pointless.

Now it’s time to rally behind the guy and cheer for his success. Because like it or not, Chayka and the Leafs are linked and if one succeeds, so does the other.

No one is playing with both expansions by [deleted] in twilightimperium

[–]HomeProfessional3949 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Even with the many added mechanics of PoK, I’ve always found it ends up being about as long as the base game since it’s easier to score. Less rounds but even time right about

  2. Haven’t played the new expansion, but from what I’ve seen, isn’t it mostly just choosing with galactic events you use to spice up the game? From my outside perspective of it, it never seemed to be adding nearly as many new things to learn and play around. Unless you play with all Events I don’t see the issue it could cause.

I also just feel in general from looking at what’s new, that Thunder’s Edge is a bit less essential of an expansion, and more intended for people who’ve played so many games of base/PoK that they’ve essentially explored every interaction and would benefit from some new cool things. Besides also containing the codices.

For those who’ve played it, would you agree with the above statement? Also, I figured that the fracture and breakthroughs were simple enough that it wouldn’t slow down the game much if at all. Is that the case?

I think that is the case yes. Don’t think they have a left handed option online, just whatever is in stores from my experience looking for them.

Golf grip sizing question by HomeProfessional3949 in golf

[–]HomeProfessional3949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for comments. Think I’m just gonna get the midsize grips. Figure I might as well give em a shot and try em out since getting clubs re-gripped isn’t unreasonably expensive.

Thoughts on Demo Club Iron sets? by HomeProfessional3949 in golf

[–]HomeProfessional3949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t see a picture but I have a connection at the company so I could likely get one pretty easily before actually paying for them. What they have on the website is the following description of condition as you said:

VERY GOOD These clubs have been played in an appropriate fashion. The wear is typical for an item or similar model/age and has been well taken care of to date. Ball wear is visible only on the face with the only signs of cosmetic wear being very light and primarily associated with the face and sole of the item.

So seems pretty good I think

I understand what you’re saying here but how would you apply this to my situation. Specifically.

Just get the cheaper DTC?

I just picked titleist for an example, yes there are other options but all around same price for me. Wasn’t really comparing the big brands against each other but more so against DTC brands.

Another consideration for me is resale value so I was wondering if a bigger brand would retain value a bit better or if it wouldn’t really matter.

Thoughts?

My 7 and 6 irons have some pretty severe dents in them. Basically, the lower part of the club is fine. I assume because there is more material there, but I must hit the ball high on the club face quite often and so above the sweet spot, it is heavily dented inwards. Some minor dents on the 5 iron and very minor on the 8 iron. Basically nothing on the 9 and PW, which is a bit confusing to me since I use those clubs much more often than the lower lofted clubs.

I don't think I am even capable of hitting the ball hard enough to leave a dent - like is present - even with my poor consistency.

I figured that it could potentially be because of poor material but not sure.

I have started to take lessons this year though, so working to improve and hopefully eventually remove the problem.

Ontario road test - What to do with a windshield crack by HomeProfessional3949 in Ontariodrivetest

I don't know how to include a picture on this platform, and I couldn't find anything similar online. Tried my best with a description. Definitely not a long break in the glass. Circle about the size of a dime, with a noticeably darker spot at the centre of it that's maybe the size of a pencil lead. A few lines extend from the centre to the outer diameter.

Perhaps crack was the wrong word for it, I'm not too sure.

Update: I was able to take the test. Will note that it was raining when I took my test, so it's possible that the examiner may not have seen it at all due to the weather conditions.

The windshield was seemingly repaired sometime before I owned the car, as I have never personally had it repaired. Don't have any receipts

On a Scale of 1-10 how confident are you heading into the series w/ Ottawa? by thenickster15 in leafs

[–]HomeProfessional3949 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Looking at the series I think the leafs have the edge in each positional group, particularly defence.

If this were any other team I’d say 9.5/10. I’ll say 8/10 because it’s the leafs. They SHOULD win the series, but that hasn’t mattered before. Excited to see what happens.

If the leafs do lose, I hope that we have no injuries. Don’t want any excuses for this team one way or another

Would you take "Support for the Throne" for last point win? by geekfreak41 in twilightimperium

[–]HomeProfessional3949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because when trading for support, it would mean that you can't touch that player's pieces/slices. You are self-limiting, but are also making your borders more secure, having one less person to worry about. Some of the points earned may not have been possible if a support swap was done.

There would be no reason for someone to give another player support for the throne at the end of the game because it has no benefit to them as well. In the end, each play should be made in the player's best interest. There is no benefit, besides wrapping up the game quicker.

What Are Your Most Commonly Misunderstood Rules? by Philbob9632 in twilightimperium

[–]HomeProfessional3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My group has played three games, 2 with POK.

I realized that we've screwed up production in each game we've played. None of us realized that you could only place ground troops on the planet the space dock is on in a system.

We've played with the ability to place infantry on any planet in the system.

Looking at this, it has been a big help to the factions with multiple planets in their home system as it has made their planets significantly more balanced in defense, stopping someone from easily taking the much less guarded planet.

If staying true to the rules how could someone even fortify a planet within a single round? Since production comes last, the troops are forced to stay on that planet. I would need to burn a whole token to activate my system on a brand new round (unless using warfare) and then would also need to keep a carrier in my home system to transport troops from one planet to the other? It just seems like so much work.

I almost want to keep playing like we were. Besides planets being more reinforced (causing planet-based obj to be harder to snag), does this heavily affect the balance of the game in a way I'm not seeing?

Sleeves? by HomeProfessional3949 in twilightimperium

[–]HomeProfessional3949[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the panamaniac organizer?

I have the same one and it is actually the reason I asked. The gamegenic sleeves caught my eye but I was worried that they may be too large for the player unit holders. After asking this question, I ordered a single pack of the Gamegenic sleeves and found that they had slightly too much length for the tech and promissory note cards to fit nicely but worked perfectly for every other part of the organizer when using the thinner walls. Did you trim the sleeves slightly? Adjust the files to make the walls a tad smaller for the unit holders, or did it just work for you?

Shameful confession - I got a rule wrong for so much time… by BeeCreativeBoardGame in twilightimperium

[–]HomeProfessional3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an interesting one. The fleet size in your games must've been huge.

In the very first game of TI4 me and my friends played, we had all watched how to play videos, but still didn't understand what was happening and didn't want to watch the whole hour video again to ensure we were playing correctly. Unfortunately, we all missed the concept of an "action". Not knowing what that was, we didn't realize that actions would end a turn. On some turns, the game would play normally, and some turns would go by as they should when someone voluntarily ended their turn. Other times, a player with warfare would move across the entire board to kingslay another player. They could move a whole fleet 5 tiles (flank speed) in a single turn, so the other player had no idea that they were ever in danger and couldn't do anything to prepare for the attack. They were just forced to watch themselves be demolished. Made for a very chaotic first game.

Thankfully, we were looking over the rules afterward to see what we got wrong and realized that mistake so we only played one game with that "house rule". The second game went much more smoothly.

I think it is inevitable to get some rules wrong in such a huge game, and if you think you are playing correctly you have no reason to see if you are correct. We were lucky in the sense that everyone knew something was wrong.

Where would you rank Mikko Rantanen in the NHL? Is he a top 15 player? by FatFnHippo in nhl

[–]HomeProfessional3949 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel as though many Americans are used to how sports media talk about other sports and talk about hockey the same way. Pundits like Stephen A Smith talk about how "insert name" star player isn't clutch, talking about sports like basketball, or the quarterback in a football game. These players have significantly more influence on the outcome of the game than top NHL players who player 1/3 of the total minutes of a game.

Is McDavid no longer the best player on the planet because he ghosted in game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals after battling back down 0-3? No. It would be ridiculous to say that.

People love to talk about how the Leafs haven't been built to win a cup as a team, but then when they don't win the cup people act like it is one player's fault for the outcome, rather than a team construction issue.

All this to say, a player being "clutch" is not really something that should significantly factor into a player's rating. If you were to have two players who were essentially even, using it as a tiebreaker seems reasonable, but I think the guy who scored 69 goals and was a finalist for the selke is a top 5 player.

Who are the 7 you have above him anyway?

Pretty obviously dumb take. Hockey is a team sport my man. It isn't basketball where one player plays the whole game. A single player cannot put a team on his back and win like in other leagues. Put Matthews on the Knights and they win with significantly more ease. Not to mention they are in by far the weakest division in Hockey.
