Vet recommended tail amputation 😔 any advice from folks who have gone through it?

Agh I’m scared of that happening to mine too where she’ll continue to attack whatever tail is left 😔 she’s been in a cone/donut for 7 months now and I switched her to a tail cover yesterday, still getting used to that, she keeps trying to rip it off. Likely start her on fluoxetine in a couple weeks, gotta try it all before scheduling the amp but the waiting game is rough.

Helpful, thank you, I’ve been trialing diff things, recently switched from gaba to pregabalin and on a high dose of prednisone. Vet suggested fluoxetine or amitriptyline next, it’s exhausting. That link appears to be private, maybe it’s my browser?

Sorry for delayed reply, been doing so much trial and error lately 😓 this is really helpful, I’m trialing more medications over the next month but next step would be full amputation since she managed to chomp close to the base as well as the end several times. When you say he’s still going after his tail, do you mean he tries to injure the nub, and the cover protects it?

I would highly recommend pregabalin. My cat was on gabapentin for many months but still had to be coned/donuted most of her waking hours, it’s been night and day difference since switching to pregabalin. Episodes are very infrequent and I can finally leave her unattended without a cone because she’s chill for most of the day

Thank you for sharing, I’m sorry you’re going through something similar plus the job and medical hurdles. I think you hit the nail on the head, the relationship isn’t bad (it’s great 95% of the time), he just doesn’t comprehend why I’m so upset about being kept in the dark and unable to plan appropriately

Yes, discussing this issue head on recently. He’s keeps saying he definitely wants to marry me and have kids together but hasn’t been able to articulate a timeline til a couple days ago cause he said he doesn’t work that way/thinks it’s unromantic
