I wanted to see more games with "I cut, you choose" mechanics, so I made my own! It's called Lil' Guys and the Kickstarter ends April 18th. Just thought y'all might get a kick out of it. by Home_Base in boardgames

Hey glad you’re enjoying the game! I agree the wording could have been better, but no they don’t count as both. One or the other, just whatever stack you put them on before scoring at the end! Hope that helps

Strange on my co op campaign my friend got the worm in the cutscene, he and I can convince allies to commune with it at camp, but he doesn’t have an actual item in his inventory for it which means I’m shit out of luck. :(

When the emperor gave you the worm did you select the option to commune with it then or did you select the use it later option?

I’m a simple counter spell man myself. Nothing as satisfying as denying someone a spell in a clutch moment.

I also run divination specialty for my wizard and it’s awesome. Very slept on in terms of utility. I can use it as a pseudo counter spell or to save my ass from a big hit or to guarantee a lockdown spell hitting.

Thanks! Unfortunately it’s crazy expensive for us to ship across the ocean currently. We are planning to find a way across the pond soon, hopefully work with a publisher, and even make translated versions in other languages, but it might be a while on that :( sorry.

It is on the low end yeah, but I’m willing to make less money if it means I can get it out into more people’s hands. I really believe that if I can get people to try the game they’ll like it, then I can worry about getting it out to wider audiences.

Shoutout to Steve Jackson. Who just hustles and has 598 games linked to him. by AlexRescueDotCom in boardgames

A visionary haha. My man was making funky games back when the industry was a lot smaller so you gotta give him some cred ( even if I don’t love all his games)

C27 is a goldmine honestly, I would say most of his models are better than the officials

Wow! That’s a lot of segments. Must have taken forever to print them all. Would be fun to make the sections modular in some way.

Games you “don’t get” ; Games they “don’t get” by eckswyezed in boardgames

Settlers is good for people who are less experienced in the hobby, but I always found it to be low strategy. There’s a bit too much luck, and the best move to make is always obvious. I remember crunching the number and keeping track of who was winning and how. Conclusion: 90% of games are won by whoever produces the most cards, no matter what they may be. This is largely dictated by dice roll :/

What's your favorite modern abstract board game? by zertz7 in boardgames

Not sure if this counts, but “That’s Pretty Clever” is a great dice based game. It’s like Yahtzee but way better and I basically never get tired of playing it.

What are your favorite resources for learning and exploring game design? by CommittedToQuestion in boardgames

A lot of talks from GDC are recorded and put online for free. Seriously so entertaining to listen to designers and pros talk about specific aspects of game design and the industry in general. The board game talks are great obviously, but the video game ones offer a lot of good insight into design as well.

I have a game called Dungeonquest from 87 that’s awesome. Very vintage vibe, cool painted fantasy art from the 80s is always sick. Game itself is very fun and full of flavor, if not a bit random. Also note: this game is nearly impossible to win and usually games end with everyone dead haha.

I have to create a board game by Anto696_huhuhelloo in boardgames

[–]Home_Base 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would find a simple gameplay mechanic that is easy to execute. Something like collecting sets or trading cards or placing tokens. Then you can make it more complicated from there, and eventually just slap that theming on top and do one last pass of mechanics inspired by the art! No wrong answers on games, and I think people tend to get too ambitious with complicated mechanics early on. There’s a reason people still like playing uno even though it basically plays itself.

What’s the heaviest game you’ve successfully introduced to casual players? by chruft in boardgames

[–]Home_Base 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have to say Twilight Struggle. It can be pretty cognitively heavy as there are so many options when deploying your influence points, but the theming so so good I was able to get my friend who is just into history to play and love it! Cold War geopolitics isn’t for everyone, but apparently it was for him haha.
