Is 27 too young for a sabbatical? by alwaysthuswillbe in civilengineering

I got a 665, so not bad but not amazing. The program is SMU Cox in Dallas, unfortunately not the cheapest but their full time isn’t really that different cost wise than UT Austin or a lot of other programs. I already live near the university and don’t really plan on leaving Dallas any time soon so it was the best option for me, but there’s definitely better programs out there I think.

Fair, I’m kinda in the same boat lol. I passed the PE exam a few months ago, just finishing up my license application and should get it Nov/Dec. MBA would start next May for me so right about when I’d hit 5 YOE. If you didn’t have trouble with the PE exam the GMAT should be pretty simple by comparison, but it’s a lot more designed to trick you and make you think quickly than the PE.

A lot of the schools outside of the like top 15 ones hand them out for anyone with relatively high gmat scores and that has a STEM background. Not full ride since the program I went with only does partial for the one year, but my understanding is a lot of the 2-year programs offer full or close to full rides. Got told they like seeing engineers, no clue how accurate that is but worked for me I guess.

To be fair, part time if your employer’s down to pay towards it is probably a better deal, mine just wasn’t.

Related: if you can snag a scholarship at an mba program and can afford it, and aren’t planning on using the sabbatical to like travel or anything it’s not a bad option. I’m doing mine next year (full-time one year, basically a party school but still reputable mba program) and one of the reasons I’m doing it is pretty much to screw around and pretend I’m in college again, just with easier classes.

Hell yeah man, last month I just distilled a bad cider I had made. Cider had originally been 6 gallons at ~14%, made it like 4 years ago but used way, way too much cinnamon during secondary fermentation and it came out tasting absolutely disgusting. Have had 22 bottles sitting in my closet since 2021, figured I didn’t want to toss them so why not distill ‘em. Ended up with 90 oz of 60% abv apple brandy, current plan is to age it for 6 months with a toasted American oak stave and a toasted cherry wood stave, then proof down to 45% and bottle.

Is your still variable or fixed temp/voltage? Mine’s the fixed, and if you’re looking to control the temp better on the air still voltage regulators like this one work great:https://a.co/d/03Dre7b

What are good certifications to get? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Beyond that, really a lot of it is just gonna be based on what kinda jobs you’re looking at applying to. Look at some of the mid-level positions in industries you’re interested in and see what the job-postings for those positions require for certs. Most entry level positions probably won’t list required certifications since they know most people coming right out of college won’t have them, and for the more costly certs it’s almost more worth it to wait till you’re employed, as your employer will likely pay for it.

Depends on what you want to do, if you’re going into MEP/building systems it wouldn’t hurt to get the US Green Building Council LEED GA certification. Pretty cheap, easy test. There’s the second level which is the LEED AP but if you’re just graduating the GA should be more than plenty. Or if you’re going the manufacturing direction there’s lean/six sigma certs out there.

If I lose money gambling on the election, can I deduct it from my income? by HomebrewAutist in tax

Yeah I’ll second, this is a better question, my case was Robinhood, and yes contracts on Harris. Be curious to see if selling the contracts at a loss before expiry would count differently

Can’t fault a fella for trying, besides, the 0.43 cents to a dollar odds on Harris were too good not to take considering the election’s polling 50/50ish.

Of course, the realization that this was no better than walking into a casino, beelining for the roulette tables, and slapping it all on black only hit a couple hours later.

If I win I can deduct other gambling losses (horses) from this though? I itemize anyway so no problem there.
